Well, I have seen such a wide variety of stats rolled that now when I DM I prefer to encourage point buy if the players go for it. I have had a player that would openly let others use the 4d6 he used for stat rolling (3e, drop the lowest). In anyone else's hands, normal dice (or low), in his the character stats would end up 55 points or higher. I also had a player (1e/2e hybrid) that rolled so badly the players at the table literally rolled character stats for him. During character creation I don't think he ever had a d6 come up higher than a 4, and 4's were rare. I don't recall the exact numbers but I believe the lowest (and we used 4d6 drop the lowest then too) character had nothing above a 6, I mean it was so bad that it was the deciding factor in everyone else (6 other players) rolling 4d6 each (drop the lowest) and having him take those stats. The odds against rolling like he did for stats would have to be astronomical. Fortunately, d20's treated him better. Come to think of it, I think d6s always treated him poorly for damage too. Now the best I have EVER seen was when my boys wanted to start learning to play. My younger son (4d6 drop the lowest) rolled 4 18's in a row followed by 2 17's, one of the 18's was actually 4 6's. Then he got very angry because I was "laughing at him." He calmed down when I explained that I was laughing because he made such a GREAT character. I let him play it for a bit, being barely 6 and not understanding the rules well, the good stats were a bit of a life-saver. Patrick
