WoT - Embracing the One Power

Quick and simple question. In the Wheel of Time RPG, does embracing the One Power provoke an AoO as does casting a weave? I don't believe it is specified anywhere in the rules.

My impression would be no, since it's really just a matter of concentrating for a round, but if anyone has an "official" answer, or even a different line of reasoning, I'd like to hear it.

Thanks!

I am not aware of any 'official' responce...thus I did not reply when I read before. I would argue that yes it would provoke an AoO. Doing anything in a threatened area that distracts you from the thing threatening you provokes one, though as with casting weaves, I would allow a concentration check to avoid (casting on defencive sort of action)

What an oversight!

There should probably be a concentration check to embrace the source in combat (DC 10, and DC 10+damage taken when hit). However, there is little chance that an opponent could tell that you're embracing the source, unless they too are a channeler of the appropriate gender. Your guard might be down, but your opponent wouldn't know.

I'll have to think about this.

Hmmm, I never noticed before that there was no AoO listing for embracing the source.

Rand describes embracing saidin as wrestling a river for control, while either Egwene or Elayne describe embracing saidar as surrenduring to it. That would imply they are momentarily distracted. However, in the books channelers quite commonly seem to embrace the source rather quickly without much fuss. It certainly does not take six seconds (it is a full-round action). I don't recall any specific moments where anyone was distracted and could not do it (other than Nynaeve and her block, but that's another story).

I'd actually be tempted to make embracing the source an attack action that does provoke an AoO. Unfortunately I have not yet had a chance to play this as my current group is uninterested.:(

I've been thinking...that if I actually RAN WoT I would make two HomeBrew Feats: Improved Embrace and Superior Embrace. The first to make embracing the source a move equivalent, the second a free action. That way as people got more skilled with the power you'd get more proficient with embracing it.

I would have to think about prerequisites though, maybe 4th level for the fisrt and 8th the second with improved a prerequ for Superior of course. Maybe a Wis 13 prereq too...I dunno.

Not that I'll actually find people to play, mind, but its what I'd do.

I THINK the first WoT netbook does include feats very similar to what you are saying.

My first instinct was NOT to have it provoke an AoO. From the book's description, you just more or less "embrace it", with no special thought or action required. You just kinda do it.

I love this game (and the series) and my little group seems to be having a lot of fun with it... but there are many editing problems with the book. Seems to be a decent fan base to help out with those issues, though.

Anyone interested can follow our campaign on my Online Wheel of Time Campaign.
