Wotbs...

First of all, where did it go? I was going to post a comment there and I can't find the War of the Burning Sky forum anymore...

Anyways, I guess I'll just post it here, and if the moderator wants, move it to where it appropriate. Thanks.

I'm running a level 6 BattleCleric, and we just did the final battle at the end of the first module, at the Fiery Forest. (we're level 6 because our DM got the level up rate wrong, so we'll be at 6 until we actually catch up to where we are supposed to be in the 2nd module).

Anyways, even with the slightly higher level characters, we had some real problems in that last battle. I was the only leader class in the party at the time.

First round, some wizard dominates my character. My turn, I fail the saving throw on the domination, then on the failed saving throw, I'm dominated for ->15<- minutes, no save.
Things got really bad and ugly after that, I mean your 4 player group is already grossly outnumbered. I'm fairly sure it would have been a TPK if I hadn't told the other players (technically illegal I know, since I was dominated), to kill the wizard and end the effect.

Doesn't this seem a wee bit overpowered?

The DM told us afterwards that we were really supposed to flee this encounter, but still....

I'm not sure what your DM had in mind, but (spoiler for The Scouring of Gate Pass below):

as written, the old dude with the domination power, and his daughter, are supposed to be the heroes' allies in that fight.

Yes, I think Marius is right in that your DM did something very, very strange there. The wizard in that battle using his domination power against a PC in that way... well, I can tell you as someone who has DMed that encounter that it is NOT written like that!

Unless all of the PC's are Evil.

I mean, your username is "DarkLord." ;)

Yeah, that wizard is not on the bad guy's side. Dunno what your DM is up to, but he's too powerful for a fight at that stage of the campaign.

Then again, Level 6 is way too powerful for the PCs to be at that point, too. It's only the first adventure.

Sounds like your DM is pretty much changing the adventure completely; which is fine, but that's not the encounter in the adventure.

Okay, first of all thanks to everyone for the replies. Always appreciated.

Now, as to our levels, yes - we are above what we are supposed to be
at that point - our DM raised us faster than he should have, he knows this,
and has told us about it - we won't get any more level ups until we reach
the appropriate point in module 2.

Okay, it looks now like our DM did use Haddin (the bitter old mage with the
daughter in the farmhouse) as an adversary, instead of a potential ally.
He does have that dominating power/effect. He's already told us he got
that wrong.

This is our first home campaign, and our DMs first turn as a DM, so we're
learning. I know it will get better as we go along.

We think WOTBS is awesome, as far as story goes, so far. We can't wait
to get more sessions in.

Thanks again for the comments gang. :)

Cool - I'm glad that you were able to talk to your DM and get things straightened out! And not to disappoint you, but if you're not going to level up until you're "supposed to," that means you won't be leveling up at ALL in the next adventure (The Indomitable Fire Forest of Innenotdar).

By the way, you might want to point your DM to these boards. There has been a lot written about the Fire Forest adventure that might line up well with your situation. In short, there are a lot of rather meaningless fights that he could probably throw right out the window since you don't need the XP to level up. I think it runs as a much better adventure if you cut out some of the unnecessary combat (there are still several cool combats even without those).

Thanks for those tips - I've brought them to our DMs attention and I believe that's what he's gonna do.

We don't care if its a while before we level up - we just love playing and the WOTBS universe is just very cool. :)
