So let's kick this off with that most contentious and ill-defined of classes: the Ranger. What does it mean to be a Ranger? A Ranger is first and foremost a man of the wilds, a woodsman. Say the word and your mind fills with images of rangy, weatherbeaten men dressed in browns and greens. Aragorn of course is the Archetypal Ranger, but even in LotR he is obviously not the typical ranger. Halbarad would be much more typical. Faramir's men battling orcs and southrons in the woods above Minas Morghul have the same skills and would be the same class, even if in LotR the term Ranger only applied to the men of fallen Arnor. Ranger is a broader term than just refering to Middle Earth. A English or Welsh yeoman archer, an Apache brave, a Yanomani hunter or a Gaulic scout are all Rangers. Note that they are all outdoorsy, wear little or no armor, and tend to fight with ranged weapons. Allthough the iconic LotR Rangers are perfectly capable of putting on heavier armour and mixing it up in melee when it's called for. Famous Rangers in History and Fantasy: Aragorn Halbarad Legolas Robin Hood Daniel Boone Colonel Bowie Tarzan Martin Longbow Tanto What's cool that the Ranger does? He is the man who keeps the others alive in the wilds. He is the one who scouts the enemy encampment, and brings the report home through whatever might try to bar his way. He is the one who both ambushes his foes and foils their ambushes. What should the Ranger do? Well, he seems to be set up for a striker role, and I can live with that. But the Iconic weapon of the Ranger is the Longbow. To quote myself in another thread: "Now in 4ed we know that the ranger is in the striker role and "killed the scout and took his stuff" implying heavily that he will have skirmish damage. Which makes sense for many of the rangers roles, but one of the roles for the ranger that I like is the stealthy hunter and archer, and skishmish damage doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense for him. So what if the ranger could either take skirmish damage or 'sniper damage'? Skirmish damge remaining the bonus precision damage that only applies if you move and sniper damage being just the opposite. So to use your sniper damage you spend a move action to aim and then the damage applies out to the first range increment of your weapon. Then you can have talent trees that allow modification. EG: A talent to let you use it out to the second range increment. A talent to penalize perception checks to spot your position when you fire, etc. " But in general he should have survival skills, sneaking skills and perception skills. He should be a skilled and deadly warrior. He should be self-reliant.
