WotC product "Savage Species" ???

There is a sidebar on page 25 of the Epic Level Handbook entitled
"Monsters as Epic Characters" which makes reference to a ( I'm supposing ) product entitled "Savage Species" , a reference tool for using monsters as PC's, complete with "level adjustments for most monsters..." .

Sounds Cool! First I have heard of it. If this is a delayed OR CANCELLED project, they should have edited out this reference.

I want such a product though! Any one out there have any info on this for me? - Or any idle speculation? "Project G" anyone?

Thanks in advance for your comments,

J

Yeah, apperently this was originally listed as Tooth and Claw, but for some reason the name was changed to Savage Species.

WORST TITLE CHANGE EVAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No one can say when it's coming out or even if it actually will becuase it's not in the catalog yet. So it will at least be next year before it does. :(

But we can assume since they printed it in epic rules it will actually come out. As to why they didn't list it as a future product, think of it this way, how would you like to flip through you epic book 5 years from now and see "COMING SOON Savage Species" when it's been out for 3 years. These books are into it for the long haul gotta be designed from a long term point of view.

Anyways, just wished they hadn't changed they name. God thats horrible!!!!

Monsters as PCs....SOLD!!! :D

Soon I will be working on an IRC game concept; "Nature of the Beast". The PCs will begin as the awakened animal companions of a slain druidess.

Then you should read the news more often! :)

Project G is something else. but if you read the news more often, you'd know exactly what that was too! :)

Seriously, though - looks like Tooth & Claw has been renamed, and that it contians ECLs for loads of monsters. Project G, on the other hand, is discussed in depth on one of the author's personal websites. I'll leave the investigative work to you - you'll apreciate the info so much more then! :)

When 3e came out, one of the biggest things I was excited about was Monsters as PC's....

Turns out you can't use monsters as PC's until they tell you how powerful the monsters are as PC's.

Which means I have to buy another book....

Grr. I really wish they would've included the ECL in the monster's stat block at first, rather than making me wait two years for a supplement that won't even list them all.

But I'm just ranting.

Well, you can always decide the ECL yourself. You can use that issue of Dragon as a reference point (sorry, don't have the issue, but I have seen it. Was within the past year IIRC). There is always trial and error as well. Something else I have thought of is that you can take away some of the abilities to "dumb it down" if you will. For instance, I want to play a tiefling, but I really don't want to take the hit on levels, so I ask the DM if I can just say I am a tiefling and be a tiefling in appearance only with maybe an ability bonus and negative modifier like a demi-human. Basically being able to say I am a tiefling is more important than actually being a tiefling. I want to have horns for flavor reasons only, let's say. Want to play a minotaur? Just roll regular stats, call it large, give it a str. bonus based on that and dock something else like charisma or intelligence. Of course if you want the cool abilities and it's not just a flavor issue, then just try and compare a regular minotaur to different levels of characters until you think they are about even.

I realize this doesn't resolve the issue completely as you said you were hoping this was done in the MM and didn't want to have to buy another "official" book. I can feel your pain, but no need to let it stop you from doing it. Best of luck!

I kind of get the feeling, and yes I may be wrong but I think that originally they planned to do Tooth and Claw as kind of the 6th splatbook, A 96 page softcover and I bet they planned to release it this year, maybe december, since they don't have anything planned for that month. But I think somewhere along the line they increased its size and rewrote and renamed it to Savage Species and I bet it will be a hardcover out sometime next spring. And I agree I liked the first title better.

I find it interesting how tight-lipped wizards is being this year on future products for 2003 all we know about are Savage Species and Ghostwalk.

Agreed. They could have easily included ECL to each stat block in the MM.
