Would it be possible (or would you allow) to have a donkey familiar? Just curious as to opinions on this...

Heck yea, what a hoot that would be. I can't think of any ways it would empower the caster, IMO it would not be as beneficial. It would however, really be a fun visual, this man always taking his donkey with him, talking to it, pampering it etc.

Sure, as long as you dont mind hearing certain phrases at the table like:

"my ass is going to deliver a touch attack"
"I'm scrying on my ass"
or
"I will communicate with my ass to scout ahead"

:)

Is that a tie-in to Bugaboo's thread ?

Nevermind.

Familiars are meant to be small animals that can perch on your shoulder. Cat, snake, raven, toad... You can't have a donkey sitting on your shoulder unless you're a big frikkin giant.

However, on the other hand, I would probably allow a multiclass paladin/sorcerer to have his mount be his familiar as well.

Considering that familiars are somewhat intelligent, how would a donkey familiar react to being used as a beast of burden?

It'd be funny to have a wizard standing there arguing with his donkey about how much weight it's willing to carry. :D

Donkey familiar? Sure. I would charge a feat for it though. The caster would get +2 CON (probably) and the usual familiar bonuses.

While the critter is big enough to kick the stuffing out of orcs and what not the size is alos a hinderance and boy is it fireball bait
