Would this be unbalancing at all?

If I gave at least some prestige classes items upon the character taking the class? I was particularly thinking of giving assassins warder cloaks, from WOT - inspired by the Unseen in the Deathgate books. Maybe take away the assassin's spellcasting to make up for it, if needs be.

Personally I see nothing wrong with giving a character an item as part of becoming a PrC. Especially since PrC's are supposed to represent elite people and what not. I don't think any abilities would need to be dropped. Granted I'm not familiar with a Warders Cloak. So unless it is super-powerful it should be ok.

If they just trained at home in their spare time, they shouldn't get a free magic item.

"Kick butt! My 'Death Strike for Dummies' book is in! I can finally pick up that assassin prc without having to travel down to the abandoned death temple on the outskirts of town for lessons!"

But seriously, I see no reason this wouldn't work. In theory, its what happens with the acolyte of the skin.

I agree with the above; just make it part of the character's level-dependant treasure.
