Scenarios tend to be moderately difficult and require some amount of tactical play, teamwork and efficient use of available resources to succeed. Compared to the other entries in the D&D Adventure System (Castle of Ravenloft, The Legend of Drizz't) the scenarios in Wrath of Ashardalon are all very similar and of medium difficulty (Ravenloft offering the bigest challenge and Drizz't being quite easy). Almost every scenario features a boss encounter using a specific lair tile that works pretty well. Characters are comparable to Ravenloft, but items are a lot more powerful. There's also some tweaks to monsters and dungeon tiles (corridors, doors) to add a bit more variety. All in all it's probably the best of the three. Since the games are compatible with each other you can also mix components for an even better gaming experience. All in all this is quite fun and reminds me favorably of 4e combat, although it's not as 'deep'. I'd rate it with 3.5 stars.
3 out of 5 rating for Wrath of Ashardalon Compared to other dungeon-crawlers (e.g. Descent) the D&D Adventure System board games can be played with minimal preparation and setup, gameplay is rather simple and fast. Players alternate between taking a turn for their selected character and monsters, so there's no dedicated game master required which is a big plus.
