Honestly it is a little early for me to settle on whether I like the new system or not (I have played about 4E 3 times since it was released). But here are my first impressions. First, it is very different from previous editions (3E was a bit of a break from 1E and 2E, but 4E seems radically different than any of them). Now this is not a bad thing. I think they made a bold move making so many changes. But that kind of change, could upset some of the people who feal it is "too different" from other editions. Second, I am not sure I really like the powers. I can see how some people might prefer them, and I don't believe they are a bad innovation. They just are not my cup of tea. It seems like they took the principles of how spellcasters operated in the game, and applied them to all classes in a balanced way (which makes sense since spell casters were thought to be overpowered by some in 3E). But I just don't like playing a fighter who uses at-will, daily, Encounter and utility powers. Again, just not my cup of tea. Third, simplicity. Personally I like the streamlining and the simplicity of the new edition. Even though I am not a big fan of the powers, they have created a very elegant, and easy to use system. It was very easy to play 4E once characters were made. Fourth, Balance. This has got to be the most balanced version of the game ever (pending splat books). I really have no complaints here. The only potential problem I can see is that maybe the strikers will end up getting more of the glory than others. But I don't think you will have some of the balance issues that plagued 3E. Fifth, Character creation. I was a little confused by the character creation section and by the sheet. It could have used a lot more examples, and the character sheet could have been more specific (the damage and attack work areas were a little hazy for my tastes). Thats it. Will have to play our current campaign the whole way through to see how well the system really functions.
