Your CHARACTERS carry magic dueling cards?

Driddle

First Post
Idea: An RPG campaign wherein the characters themselves carry dueling game cards and fight each other that way on a quest to collect rarer, more powerful cards. So instead of playing M:tG yourself, you play your PC who plays something like M:tG.

Has it been done?

Well, Yu-Gi-Oh and a bunch of other really bad cartoons that barely pretent to be anytihng but merchandising work like this. But then again, all those shows s*ck.

I honestly don't mean to poop on your idea or in your thread, but I and my friends find game ideas like this painful for some reason. I don't really understand why, as cards are as viable a mechanic as dice rolling, and we all have some M:tG in our gaming histories... but it just feels awkward and wrong to us.

Kudos to those who enjoy it, but I hear the idea a lot and every time it makes me shudder. Sorry, just being honest.

Hmm... I could see two ways to do this:

1) As a sort of "mini-game" for the characters. A pastime and something to diverge from the normal campaign sometimes.

2) As a d20 based simulation, where the cards you have fight -- perhaps somewhat like the D&D Miniatures Game. There could be powerups, lands to allow you to pay for the creatures, or what-have-you, so you could make it like whatever game you wish. For example:

Yujee: I play... THE ETTIN CARD!

Curt: No! The Ettin is strong, tough, and is more than a match for my Human Paladin! Unless I play my enchantment... the HOLY AVENGER CARD!

Yujee: Darn. Okay, draw phase.

Many Final Fantasy games have had mini-games where your characters were playing card games. As long as all the PCs enjoy it, its optional, and doesnt detract from mainline game activities I dont see a problem with it.

One of the character classes from BESM d20 brought this to mind: the Pet Monster Trainer. Basically, the character gains 'pet monsters' (ala Pikachu) as he advances in experience, and the character (or player?) can customize those monsters with more powers (ala 'evolve') as the game progresses. The descriptive text of the class explains that the PC is quite often competing against other pet monster trainers. ... So in effect, the player has a character who is playing a game of his own. (I suppose the pet monsters could sit down for a card game against each other, but that's just too recursive to consider.)

In computer RPG's the minigame is popular.

In Knights of the Old Republic you can play pazzak which is basically a CCG within the game.

In many other RPG's the minigames (game with in the game) is popular and include pocket monster style games.

But it might be fun for your group. I say try it...

Oh, I'm not going to try it myself. Sometimes I just enjoy bringing up a topic purely for the discussion of it, sans actual application.

No, wizards don't fight with cards. That would make them little more then Fantasy world nerds. When two spellcasters meet they fight to the death! When one mage kills another he gets that mages magic power a la Highlander. Mages Guilds were created to put a halt to the rampant homicide among wizards. When you join a Guild you swear a oath not to kill members of your guild and to only attack mages from other Guilds in sanctioned duels. Sorcerers are greatly feared for they don't need any Guild mages to teach them and they can attack any spellcaster with impunity!
