So, as today's Google Doodle reminds us, it is the 200th anniversary of the Brother's Grimm and their collections of fairy tales...

It is also just a few days before Christmas.... and my wife has come down with the flu. The poor woman is at home, sick, and can use some entertainment. And she *loves* fairy tales.

So, folks, what are your favorite media representations of fairy tales (TV or movie), and why? Please give me some tigns I can hunt down on Netflix, Amazon instant video, or whatever.

Once Upon a Time has been pretty solid, but I suspect she's already familiar. If not, it does a great job of mixing multiple story lines based on traditional fairy tales in a character-driven drama with mystery.

I have more than one favorite, if that's alright.

Thor - Malekith and his fellow Dark Elves that appear in Walt Simonson's run are pretty awesome. They're quite dangerous and I hope the upcoming Thor sequel does them justice.

Labyrinth - Jareth and the Goblins are also pretty sweet, particularly when they break out into a badass musical number. Or maybe I was hynoptised by David Bowie's crotch. ;)

Pan's Labyrinth - Leave it to Guillermo Del Toro to make a Land of Faerie that equal parts enchanting and s**t in your pants frightening.

Hellboy - Another Del Toro example from The Golden Army, but the original comic also featured the Fair Folk in one of my favorite stories.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People is classic. It does a very good job or portraying the interactions between humans and the little fey.

Hook or really any of the Peter Pan movies could work. I like Hook for the cast. Robin Williams zaniness works well for Peter Pan.

The Canadian TV series Lost Girl works well especially if she likes the current Paranormal women kick ass genre.

The Secret of Roan Inish is a lesser known kids film that has some cool magic and wonder in it.

Dark crystal, Labyrinth, Willow, Never Ending Story all are well known movies that should fit well.

Jim Hensen's the Storyteller is less known then those but it is truly magical and amazing. It is classic Hensen with great puppets, awesome storytelling, and it retells stories that are not well known.

Yeah, let me echo this -- if you like Grimm's original tales you'll like Storyteller. Episodes are on Amazon and probably Netflix.
