I'm obligated to say kender (see my sig). That being said, they're tons of fun. ;) I know they have a bad rep, but they really revolutionized halflings. Got them out of the shire and into adventuring. I like hobbits, but moreso in the Lord of the Rings. I'm not familiar enough with Pathfinder's halflings, but I like that they kind of go back to the roots of halflings, hairy feet and all. For a long while, I wanted to go back to the hairy foot archetype. Nowadays, I settle for them being a subrace of halflings. The Advanced Player's Guide calls them Shire Halflings. Works for me. The 3rd edition halfling seemed more like a hodgepodge of various halfling races, with little identity of its own. I didn't care for it as well. Definitely some kender influence here, but it seemed like a watered-down version to me. I dunno. The 4th edition halflings have a little more flavor. Still some of the themes have remained from 3e. Despite the similarities, I like this one better. The art in the PHB is just awesome. That alone makes a huge difference. Besides, I think I've settled on them drawing from kender some, but also being spunky scrappers. This is an archetype that has popped up a bit in gaming circles, seemingly all on its own. The feral halflings of Dark Sun are all kinds of awesome. As mentioned above, it's neat when you're afraid of halflings!
