I'm running a campaign with 3 level 8 PCs. I actually picked up mid-campaign from the other DM, but changed it up so it takes place in FR. All 3 of the PCs are from the North, around Waterdeep and Silverymoon. The campaign started them at level 5, so they had enough money to hire a wizard to give them a one-way trip to Shadowdale, where they went in search of adventure. In Shadowdale, they were asked by the Temple of Lathander to look for a missing cleric within the Spiderhaunt Woods. The PCs found him, but discovered that he had converted to the Church of Shar. In addition, the cleric stole an artifact from the temple, a magical stone known as the Heart of the Phoenix. They chased the cleric to the town of Tilverton to the south. This was all backstory and gave the PCs info on how the campaign started. While in Tilverton, they made the acquantice of the Purple Dragons, explored the sewers running into a mind flayer and a vampire spawn of Cyric. They agreed to help a priest of Lathander within Tilverton, protect the shrine from the Priest of Shar that they were chasing. They had 3 days to kill before the priest returned to Tilverton. During that time they were targeted by a group of Fire Knive assassins and robbed by the Rogues of Tilverton. They patrolled the Stonelands with a Harper from Tilverton and ended up killing a stone giant bandit. They returned to Tilverton and found the Fire Knive base within the sewers and put a stop to them. They also visited the Church of Gond and purchased some fine firearms. Finally, the Priest of Shar arrived and the PCs defeated him and retrieved the Heart of the Phoenix. Before returning to Shadowdale, they decided to go and explore the Stonelands with their Harper friend one last time. Actually, it was also to get a discount from her brother who would sell them a magical weapon at half-price for accompanying her sister on another patrol mission. In the Stonelands, they found a keep infested with orc raiders, which they cleared out. Now, they are making plans to make the keep their own and claim the title of the Baron of the Stonelands. King Azoun IV has a standing invitation for any adventurer who can clear the Stonelands. The campaign takes place during the Year of the Wyvern, roughly between the events in the 2nd Ed Campaign Setting and the events in the FRCS. Not sure what other plot or story elements to add yet, just basic guard the keep from attacks and explore the area around the Stonelands. The PCs still have to return the Heart of the Phoenix to Shadowdale, but are taking their time since they are interested in their new stronghold. I've added in elements dealing with the Iron Throne, who are secretly supplying weapons to evil doers. The PCs know of this and suspect this, but have no concrete proof.
