The flyby attack in question is the one of the copper dragon (MM2). It states that the dragon can make a (now this is the good part) melee basic attack at any point during the movement. The dragon has in fact two different melee basic attacks - a bite and a claw. Now the claw is nothing special; attack vs. ac and some damage. The bite on the other hand... The bite is clearly superior to the claw as it does more damage, additional acid damage and, most importantly, the dragon is allowed to shift 2 squares before and after the attack. After reading this I couldn't help myself from breaking out into hysterical laughter. If I understand this correctly, the dragon can effectively dart in and chew at even the most precariously well-hidden squishy adventurer-types and get away with it . It can even chew on more sturdy melee combatants with relative ease, as it's a reach 2 attack. This of course fits perfectly with the copper dragon archetype of the most agile and competent fliers of all the dragons and the skirmisher role. But isn't this a bit overkill, mechanically speaking? How does the standard adventuring group cope with this scenario? To clarify, since the dragon has hover it is allowed to shift during flight. During the flight allowed by flyby attack the dragon can make a melee basic attack, a bite or a claw attack. The bite attack consists of a shift before and after the attack which is part of the attack power. Is this correct?
