Session 208, Part Two - Time for a Savage Beating Glaucia stepped out of the shadows in the Palacio Justicia de los Huesos del Tirania Widoreva. She gnashed her canines and said, “To be brief: Here in Ber we thrash slavers, but most of the nation is blind to their new chains. I am not blind, and so enemies seek me. I made a blunder as I came to meet you. Some of them will be arriving soon.” Almost immediately, the space filled up with dozens of mobile scrying sensors that resembled disembodied eyes (invisible to all but Leon and Glaucia, who was using truesight too). Two ominous, purple lights also appeared nearby. Brakken stepped up beside Glaucia and shielded her from detection with his mind. Glaucia held up a warding hand, and a broad shell of faintly visible energy appeared around all of them. “Cowards hide behind guns and bows,” she announced. “If you want to kill us, you’ll have to come closer.” An overconfident ghost councillor floated casually into the courtroom. Korrigan knew him to be Shuman Larkins. “More tempting targets have presented themselves it seems. We mustn’t miss this opportunity to please Nicodemus! Hasten, my eclipse killers! To work!” Half a dozen silhouettes scuttled out of hiding, paired off against Gupta, Uriel and Leon, and vanished into their shadows – invisible when adjacent to a foe. It was hard to avoid their blades and their attacks were swingeing. Two more fired crossbow bolts at Uru – the only unit member outside Glaucia’s ward (and no longer hidden thanks to Shuman Larkin’s magical eyes). He ducked and dodged adroitly and had Little Jack put up an opaque black shield, before scuttling over to Larkins to harass him. Larkins waved a hand and summoned two more purple lights. The line between two of these nodes passed through Uru and Rumdoom, whose animal instincts to panic were aroused. Uru felt a frantic urge to run, following the path of this malevolent gauntlet, but he shrugged it off. Rumdoom was not so lucky, and began jogging along the lines, with his entourage in tow. Uriel cast truesight and stepped away from his assailants, revealing them. Quratulain now had a fair number of targets and she shot at them all with her new lantern blaster. She chose the ‘frost’ setting, otherwise it may have been more efficacious, and fiddled with the dial to try again. Larkins casually reached out and touched Uru’s shield, shattering it. “Our grand design has greatly increased the power of those bonded with Nicodemus,” he said, and thrust his palm out to touch Uru. He missed; Uru scuttled back, sensing the necrotic power the ghost wielded. Larkins scoffed and flew high into the air, but was still caught up when Uru summoned the Genius Loci of Seobriga: the spirits of the city were old friends, and tugged, pulled and tore at his foes. Korrigan apologised to his friends, who would experience a slight disturbance: he stomped on the ground, knocking all of the eclipse killers away. Quratulain took the opportunity of their exposure, and opened fire with her blaster set to ‘force’. Several died. Things got complicated: Uriel summoned the power of his incarnation, Cardinal Tadeas. Larkins summoned more nodes, and a horrid necrotic orb. Korrigan yelled an order, and everyone move away from it, sharpish. Leon began dispelling the nodes, as did Glaucia, causing Rumdoom to stop jogging and stand, confused. Larkins didn’t like that, so he glanced at Leon and put a shushing finger to his lips. Leon’s tongue began to rot in his head! Then Quratulain fired again, and more eclipse killers fell. Freed up, Uriel strode towards Larkins, sacrificed a fraction of his lifeforce to empower his sunbeam spell, and obliterated Larkins with radiance. Before Larkins could dissolve and return to the ghost council, Uriel captured his spirit and forced him to remain. That would confuse Nicodemus!
