Then those are not actual parts of the handle. Those are wax molds used to cast the metal into the desired shape. I've worked metal before, and the process works like this: You create a wax model of the desired piece, then you pour plaster around it. When the plaster hardens, you heat it up and the wax melts out, but the shape remains inside the plaster. The empty space within the plaster becomes a mold. After that, you pour the metal into the mold, let it cool, and then break away the plaster surrounding it. Finally, you should have a piece of metal in the same shape as the wax model you created earlier.

This process is known as Lost Wax Casting.
