Zelda voted best game ever

Zelda was great, but I have never wished that I could really revisit "those days". For me the games that make me want to timewarp are 1. M.U.L.E. and 2. System Shock 2.

BOOYEAH!! :D

I understand wanting to revisit those days.

They were a time of innocence...when every individual bit and byte mattered, and they made damn sure to push each one to give 110%! Back then, we only had 8 bits in the games and 8 buttons on the controllers, and we were glad to have them! It's no surprise that The Legend of Zelda is the best game of all time.

If I could go back to the Gold Box series days, I would. Or even the old Sierra On-Line adventure games like King's Quest, Space Quest, and Police Quest.

Those were the days...

I remember the first ones ever since I was a little kid, but I could never figure out the first one, because I was too young, but when my parents bought me A Link to the Past...

I would love to see this top 100 list posted somewhere.

As I understand it, the top five were:

Zelda
Doom
Tetris
Grand Theft Auto 3: Vice City
Madden NFL 2003

I call bovine by-product on this list. :)

Ultima 4 (released in 1985 by Origin Systems, and the closest thing to a true roleplaying game the market yet saw) was to me better and more revolutionary than any of the games on this top 5 list. Having Played all 5 of the above games, at least partially, none of them had the quality, depth, and complexity that the above had.

Did Final Fantasy I even make this list? That was a truly worthwhile game? Did Wizardry? Sheer Madness, in my opinion.

Any game that requires you to follow a path of virtue, making you watch how you react to situations for the entire game until the very end, require you to search a swamp inch by inch for powerful spell components by the light of a full moon, have you explore and research the burial site of powerful arms and armor, THAT is the Best Game Ever.

While I agree with Zelda topping the list, I'm highly suspicious of any list thrown together where Entertainment Weekly is involved. Their movie reviews suck. Their game reviews are even worse. Even the lowliest, most disreputable gaming magazines have far better critiques than the garbage EW spews forth. The mere thought that their staff had any input into this list renders it null and void, from a standpoint of credibilty.

Madden 2003? How can any game that's part of a series of games, each only an incremental improvement over the last, be one of the top 5 best games of all time? Besides, I have Madden 2003, and it isn't that great.

Zelda and Tetris I can agree with.

What about Pac-man? That game was a cultural phenomenon. This list is a load of hooey.

I think GTA3 and especially Madden 2003 are products of the old "blinded by recent releases phonomenon" which you always see when people create lists of the best books, games, and movies.

Tetris I can agree with.

Zelda... eh... while design was incredible, typical for Miyamoto's work, it didn't really do much to advance or define the genre or technology either for that matter.

Doom... now there is a game which had not only one but three major tech, gameplay or genre related innovations.
1) textures on floors and ceilings in a first person environment
2) z axis added creating a "fake" 3d environment

.... these two made for the possibility to create realistic environments, and the artwork, level design, creature design were all incredible for the time

3) deathmatches ... this is the game that started it all
4) user customizability ... again doom pretty much launched that trend, being built with a certain amount of customizability in mind

I think if they redo this list in 20 years, there is a good chance Doom and Tetris will still be near the top, and there is an outside chance for Zelda, but Madden 2003 and GTA3 will be dim memories.

He heh... I should try to dig up the list from the late, great Next Generation magazine of the top 100 games of all time.
