'Zeno Clash' makers make sense..

from here. Some guilt trip pirate parleying, posted on torrent sites etc :)

I’m one of the developers of Zeno Clash. I would appreciate you read this if you are about to download this file.

Zeno Clash is an independently funded game by a very small and sacrificed group of people. The only way in which we can continue making games like this (or a sequel) is to have good sales.

I am aware that at this moment there is still no demo of the game, but we are working on one which will be available soon.

We cannot do anything to stop piracy of the game (and honestly don’t intend to do so) but if you are downloading because you wish to try before you buy, I would ask that you purchase the game (and support the independent game development scene) if you enjoy it. We plan on updating Zeno Clash with DLC and continuing support for the game long after it’s release.

Thanks for taking the time to read this… hopefully it will make a difference.

"...a very small and sacrificed group of people."

The ritual sacrifices will continue until morale improves?

Not sure I agree with you there. There's definitely pirates who are good-aligned, considering what they do as a form of information war on the Powers That Be. Those pirates (and, more importantly, those consumers that dwarf the number of pirates on such sites) might very well buy indie.

To be fair, such a tactic will work, Umbran. The ritual sacrificer gets pleasure out of his work, after all, at a minimum of a "at least it's not me" kind.

Are you saying that the game will be a commercial failure due to this?

To answer a question with another question, how do you get from "guilt only works on other good-aligned people" to "the game will be a commercial failure"? That seems an awful long stretch, to me.

Yeah, that's quite a big stretch. At most, I could maybe infer that he means that this request will fail... not the game. Games are currently capable of success despite people pirating them.

Regarding whether this request will work.. keep in mind that the plea is to those that are downloading the game to demo it, not those stealing it anyways. The person who intends to demo it is likely closer to the "Good" alignment already, and guilt will be more likely to work on them.

Cause he said that there are not a lot of good-aligned pirates out there. But since the company did take care to address them (pirates) it means that this demographic is significant.

Intentions or behavior is not something discrete. Alignment in D&D is, but I think we are talking about the real world here. At least, I am sure the company's comment was. :)
