..I remember having a list of half-dragon types and abilities back in 2nd ed. Most believed that they were way too powerful to be a pc race. Thus, you had them with a high Level Adjustment in 3rd. In the end, enough people wanted a more balanced, playable draconic race that they came up with the Dragonborn in 4th.

..I think that a current half-dragon would probably be bigger, maybe large size, and somehow fiercer looking than a dragonborn(if that were somehow possible). Oh, and they probably would have functioning wings.

Dragonborn was created in 3.5 not 4 edition, in 3.5 in order to become a dragonborn, you had to share the same ideals as Bahamut but didn't have to be Lawful Good, 100 GP spent to make a shell made out of good dragon scales. After the ritual any race would get a +2 Con and -2 Dex on top of their normal bonuses (elves would get no bonuses +2 dex -2 con, then +2 con then -2 dex)

One of the big things to remember about half-dragons is that due to their magic they can breed with ANYTHING. Half-Human's are beefier more bestial looking than dragonborn with a more pronounced snout, thicker scales, long claws and the like, while half-dragon bears, bugbears and bulettes obviously look nothing like a dragonborn.

Really makes you wonder what a dragon gets up to sometimes.

They can live basically forever and have access to shape changing, after a few hundred years you've done a lot of things to alleviate boredom, or just out of idle curiosity. Who is going to judge you? You're a dragon.

The major differences between the two is that Half-Dragons have a rechargeable breath weapon in 5ed, where dragonborn have to wait for a rest in order to get theirs back, Also Half-Dragons have better vision in the dark. So it it pretty much the minor details that make the two different.
