Lani carries the waterskin when she sails. The other things she wears/carries only as needed. She has the armor only at the insistence of the others, in case the island should be attacked. She wears the malo when she's around large groups of people, and the decorative top for special occasions only.

Lani brings all three when she sails and when she hunts on land and the halfspear and dagger when she hunts underwater.

Lani is somewhat of a strange creature. She was found on the shore several years ago with no memories, and raised by the Takanui. Her origins are unknown to all, but speculated upon often. The fey blood courses strongly through her veins and she sometimes appears uncomfortable around the clan, as well as on land. She often cuts her curly red-brown hair as short as she can, to enable her to swim more effectively. Similarly, she often swims, hunts, and sails naked (giving her a deep tan), though often when she is on land she respects custom and wears a malo. She can be aloof but tries her best to fit in with her adopted clan. She appears to relax the most around Tatiki and the other Urukehu, but even around them hardly ever lets her guard down completely. On those rare occasions, her fey side is even more pronounced. While she is more open and graceful, she also is strangely--sometimes frighteningly--alien.

Wai (as he is known to his friends) is the only son of Rangi Takanui. Distant cousins of the current Chief, Rangi and his family own a rather large plantation about two miles outside of the village. Mainly producing coconuts and mangoes, the plantation is rather prosperous. As a result, Wai has grown up as a somewhat spoiled child -- only his winning smile and generally good nature prevent him from being a truly annoying individual.

Wai's mother died giving birth when Wai was 3 years old. His only maternal influences are his grandmother (Moana) and Afa, an O'Punga that helps work his father's plantation. Moana recently decided to move to the village itself, as the walk from the plantation is getting to be too much for her aged body.

Other than his father, Wai truly looks up to one person... or rather, her memory. Wai's great grandmother Tama was a powerful sorcerer with a great knowledge of weather spells. It is through her that he gets his talents. While he is an indifferent student at best, his one scholarly accomplishment has been to learn how to understand the knotted cords left behind by his great grandmother. These knotted cords and an old cloak of Tama's are kept on the plantation. While his father could not deny his son the simple Coral Bracers Tama used to wear, he feels the rest of her belongings might be dangerous and keeps them locked away.

Wai's most prized possession is the pair of Coral Bracers that used to belong to Tama. The minor protective magic embedded in the Coral is far less important to him than the fact that his idolized great grandmother used to wear them. He also has a halfspear that Afa's husband Fetu carved for him, tipped with a chunk of obsidian that he traded for himself.

Wai's young life has been one of relative ease. On a day to day basis, he helps his father and the workers on the plantation. When he can get time, he practices his few spells in a secluded corner of the lagoon. Generally, he uses his magic missiles to kill small fish to add to his father's table. While it isn't a significant addition to their food supply, Wai felt vaguely guilty the first few times he killed the fish and left them behind.

About the only regret in Wai's life is that he will likely never have a chance at the woman he has an enormous crush on -- Chief Makea's daughter Ru-Hina. The lovely young lady will most likely be married to someone with more influence than Wai will ever have... not that he has ever had the guts to tell her of his feelings for her. It is something of a joke among Wai's friends that he moons after Ru-Hina whenever he sees her, but completely loses his composure when she is nearby.

Rangi is Wai's father. He owns a large plantation and works it himself along with two O'Punga hired hands. In his youth, he often fought to defend the island from threats, though his fighting days are mostly behind him now.

Rangi is often a cold man, except where his son is concerned. He learned early in his fighting days how to intimidate opponents to hamper their fighting ability. This ability has served him well in dealings with others and few can meet his stare without flinching a bit. Rangi has never been known to lie and is a shrewd judge of character.

Oddly enough for such a man, Rangi has a talent for woodwork and produces little carvings and trinkets that seem totally at odds with his harsh exterior. These charms -- often in the form of dolphins, birds, and other animals -- are quite sought after by others.

Of all Wai's friends, Tatiki is Rangi's favorite, for the young Urukehu has the same gift for creation that Rangi does, though he uses a different medium. One of Rangi's prized possessions is a shell necklace that Tatiki made for him and traded for a carved dolphin that Rangi had made.

Despite their difficulties in expressing it to each other, Wai and Rangi are very close and love each other a great deal. Rangi is very proud of his son's powers, though he does not understand them. His worry is that his son's carefree attitude and easy-going approach to life will keep him from amounting to much, but he hasn't ever expressed this feeling to Wai.

Moana

Moana is Wai's grandmother and has looked after the boy for all her life. She is a well-known weaver and supported herself after her husband died at sea when his fishing boat sank. She is proud of both her son and grandson.

Advancing age has led her to move into a small hut in the village. She can no longer walk well and could not regularly make the journey from the plantation into the village.

Afa and Fetu
O'Punga Commoner 1's

Afa and Fetu are a married couple that work for Rangi Takanui. The two O'Punga came to the island before Wai was born and were not generally well-received.

Rangi heard about their troubles and offered Fetu land on his plantation in exchange for their hard work. Fetu accepted.

Fetu generally works with Rangi on the plantation and helps with harvesting and care for the trees. Afa takes care of the cooking and general maintenance since Rangi's wife died. She also helped to look after Wai growing up and regards the young sorcerer as the son she never had.

The two have never been known to talk of their past or where they came from. Rangi has never pried into their lives and Wai grew up with them so it has never even occurred to him ask if they came from elsewhere.

While they are sometimes the targets of ridicule, Afa and Fetu are happy on the Rangi plantation.
