Judging by the wind, we have less than an hour before it will overtake us."

During this time, Mäelström has walked to his room and donned (1min) his mithral chainshirt under his linen shirt, put on his gloves, and taken his weapons up to the deck (he is trying to keep his snake familiar hidden inside his clothes).

About half a minute before the boat closed (his approximate judgement), he casts Shield (his AC rises to 23, duration 6 minutes).

Then he tries to move to a spot in order to get some half cover, and wait for the boat to approach.

It is now about 200 feet away, and closing fast (3 rounds).

As soon as the pirate ship is within 120ft, he casts a Lightning Bolt on the tightest pack of pirates upperdeck, trying to catch as many as possible in the line, damage 6d6. I assume he has time time only for one bolt, so he goes back to the cover and load his Crossbow.

Rolls Summary:
Initiative = d20 + 4 = 8
Shield (Arcane Spell Failure) = d10 = 9 > 1 (Ok)
Lightning Bolt (Arcane Spell Failure) = d10 = 7 > 1 (Ok)
Lightning Bolt (Damage) = 6d6 = 5 + 1 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 5 = 19

For his second round action, Bribben will cast Bull's Strength on himself, giving him an 18. The fireball and the lightning bolt hit the pirates nearly at the same time. The fireball explodes in the middle of the pirates hiding behind tower sheilds. A burst of flame incinerates several pirates. A few manage to duck behind their shields, and a few others manage to dodge some of the flames, but still writhe in pain as fire ravages their body. Flames lick the wooden deck, ropes start to catch fire, and flames overtake the bottom of the sail.

Just as a dozen pirates drop weapons and pick up bailing buckets to douse the flames, a lighning bolt crashes through them. Crackling with electricity, water and wooden pails go flying through the air as several pirates jerk and twist in pain before falling to the ground.

As the smell of burning flesh wafts to the Favor's Folly, Captain Goodman swears lustily. A booming voice calls to the spellcasters, "And what are we going to sail if you destroy the pirate ship? Eh?"

The pirate ship suddenly veers away from the Folly. A large orc wearing a chain shirt and an ornate gold and iron helment can barely be seen on the ship's aft deck over an ogre who shields him from view. He is shouting orders to his crew, many of whom drop shields and weapons and start to change sail and course away. As arrows and a spear crash into the crew, felling more of them, the Folly quickly closes on the pirates. As the hunter becomes the hunted, the pirate captain realizes the only escape will be victory over the Keolanders.

With a thump, the boats crash together. Grappling hooks swing out from some of the pirates, as others confusedly look to their captiain for advice. He growls out, "Victory or Death," on orcish, and the battle commences.

The crew of the Folly quickly rushes below decks or into the cabins, leaving the party to do the fighting. The pirates are milling about in confusion, 1/4 of their number having been killed by magic or missile fire. The Captain has rallied them, but their initiative is 12. He appears to be yelling to his crew to cut the lines and make way for open sea. All of the pirates are out of the rigging except for 2 atop each mast (not present on the map). I ran out of numbers, so they got reused for the pirates. Hope it doesn't get too confusing. :)

A number of grappling lines cross between the ships. You will automatically make any climb/balance/etc checks going across, unless someone attacks you or is on the other side. It takes one full move action to cross ships on a line. While doing so, no dex bonus to AC. You can also try to swing across (a move action), but you must make a rope use check. You can go to anywhere in the middle portion of the ship, ending up in somewhere in the column closest to the Folly (you pick where). This will count as a charge, though, and you can attack at the end of the move, going anywhere on the ship you wish.

The middle section of the pirate ship is still burning lightly, giving off enough smoke that everybody on the boat has 20% concealment. The captain has 75% cover from all missilefire except from Fealnne, who faces 50% cover. The flames will be ignored re damage, cover, etc.

If you fall into the sea between the ships, you have a 50% chance each turn to be smashed between them, taking 3d8 damage.

Arr! Avast ya scurvy dogs!

OOC: What´s the actual distance between the two ships? It looks like 10 feet in the map, but I´m not sure.

Also note that Norbac, being Large now, has a larger face (and reach) on the map.

People, don´t forget to add a +1 morale bonus to hit and saving throws against fear effects, and a +1 luck bonus to hit, damage, saves and skill checks.

The ships are a maximum of 15' apart, average of 10', but the rocking of the waves closes/increases the distance. The ropes are fairly loose, and it appears the pirates aren't making much effort to secure the ropes or to draw the ships closer after the initial contact.

Someone, I know facing for your PC has changed, but it's a pain in the buttar to get 4-square facing right in the map, esp. w/ color. I'm not going to change it unless it becomes relevant - and I mean really relevant! :)
