The Lego Movie

I saw this last night with my wife and three boys ages 9-13. It's cute and funny for kids. I found mildly entertaining. The humor is silly -- like kids love -- and the story is hokey -- like kids love.

We still find ourselves quoting lines from the movie, including that song, even the next day. It's worth taking your kids to see it.

I don't know. I found that all that Lord Business business was a subtle anti-capitalist message directed at kids.

what movie doesn't have an anti-capitalist message?

That's a rhetorical question. I haven't seen the Lego Movie yet, but it's this or Robocop for valentine's day. We don't watch chick flicks.

As a theme, more movies with a bad guy have that bad guy be rich and evil than not. Heck, Robocop is anti-commercialism/capitalism.

Power corrupts. Money is power. People who focus strongly on getting money thus tend to illustrate that corruption. At least in stories.

This doesn't have an anti-capitalist message. I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone, because the surprises and links were fun for me to discover while watching.

From what I'm reading on the reviews for robocop..i'd say go with the Lego Movie and there really isn't an ant-capitalist message, I've added The Lego Movie to the list of movies I wanna get on blu-ray half way thru it.

Risky Business, The People vs. Larry Flint, The Secret of My Success?

Robocop, Die Hard, 101 Dalmations.

Obviously not every film is anti-C. But a lot of the ones I see, where as I said, they feature a prominent villain, that villain is rich and evil. Is that their main message? Probably not. But it's in there.

Heck, Tony Stark is actually the twist on the trope, by being a rich guy, who decides to use his power for good.

In real life, not all rich people are bad. But the lesson from such stories are that avarice is the root of evil. So if all that defines you is love of money, then you will become evil. It's a good lesson for people who have money. It's a bit more subtle of a lesson for those who don't if they don't also learn to distinguish between those who have money but still do good, and those who abuse their power. Rich people are bad, is not the lesson.

Indeed, the lesson is more along the line of "do not get rich if your poor, leave that to other people, you are more happy and good without money".

Beware of Trolls.

The movie is fun. Of course, I still like Legos at 40, so maybe I'm biased. Was fun being in the theaters, and having 50-od kids quoting the bits that were in the trailer.

Good, fun, silly movie. Plenty of jokes for the adults, plenty of silly for the kids, and some nice subversive comments about a structured society. The only message is one that can be found in the Toy Story movies. Excuse me, I have to find a 2x4 flat aqua.

I learned that the curved pieces are called macaroni.

I like how they also showed the number of the pieces when they were looking around.

My wife still sings, "Everything is Awesome." And I can still get a smile from my kids by saying, "Spaceship!"
