in a 4E game, I managed to "trip" a flying dragon. It fell at...uh I forget the speed, but we were on top of a 1000' cliff and long story short, kept failing its save until it hit the ground and died. DM walked away in disgust with 4E. I thought it was great fun.

Yeah! Yeah! THAT'S the spirit!!!

Well if it's a young dragon a battle master fighter can just shoot him down using a bow and the trip attack maneuver.
An oath of ancients paladin or ranger with ensnaring strike can also shoot them out of the sky.

Ensnaring Strike! Sa-WHEEEEET!!! I know what class I'LL be playing in Tyranny of Dragons! Make my DM CRY!!!

Wow, pretty cheesy. Think i'll house rule the drop is 60' before a winged flier can right itself for my own game.

Super lame, dude. It's not wrong for the PCs to be good at something, especially if they're being creative. And a creative DM would be able to challenge creative players. Instead of breaking the rules to favor your monsters, try being creative. This is a game about creativity.

Picking over the rules looking for abuses isn't being creative. Nor is turning combat into one shot rocket tag, especially since both players and their foes taking to the air isn't that unusual at high levels.

Now perhaps 150' might be a better distance so near ground fliers still are likely to have a rough landing.

There was another thread a few weeks back about the speed and distance things fall. The end result was something like 500 ft in the first round and 1000 ft every round after that until it hits ground, the exact real world numbers are a bit different but those are close enough in a game with hit points and dragons.

The spell is a str saving throw and gives the target advantage if it is large or larger. I wouldnt recommend it as dragons have high strength and are usually size of large or huge.
