D&D 5E Volo's Guide to Monsters - Which monsters do you want to see?

ETA: I want to see "Wizards" and "Clerics" at multiple levels, maybe a few "warlocks" and "druids" thrown in, and some "barbarians" and warriors of multiple levels. It would be cool to see some more swashbuckling warrior types as well.
As my campaign IS largely "human only," I am definitely interested in more humans, particularly warlocks and barbarians.

Aside from that I'd like more weird stuff: ulitharids, for example. In general though, I'm happy with the MM. The only real interest I have in Volo's Guide is picking up the limited edition.

I'd like most of the stuff in the OP (though I don't care so much about the skeleton and zombie variants).

I'd love to see more eastern-themed monsters, such as lung dragons, and we definitely need more fey.

For me, it's all about iconic IP. If there are no newly created monster in there whatsoever, I'll be happy. I'd like them to focus on a lot of the stuff that was addressed in the articles and surveys from James Wyatt back during the 5e development stage. I'm guessing there are a whole lot of monsters that were fairly well developed but couldn't fit into the MM. (In fact, I believe it was Chris Perkins who said there was enough on the the chopping block floor to serve as a good foundation for MM2). I want them all in this book, because they were mostly iconic D&D monsters.

The reason for this is that many people (including myself) have campaign settings or ongoing campaigns that got converted to 5e. Now we don't have stats for long-standing D&D monsters that are walking around our worlds. That kind of sucks, and I hope it will be fixed with this book.

I remember Perkins saying that as well, and I wouldnt be surprised if most, if not all, of those monsters that didn't quite make the cut for the MM went directly to the front of the queue to appear in VGtM.

I expect the monsters in the book to consist of the monsters that didn't make the cut for the MM, iconic monsters that will get full ecology and player race coverage, and a few fun "wild card" monsters (like the flumph in the MM) added for a bit of whimsy and nostalgia.

I want more devils and demons, more fey, and more undead. I really want more human variants as well (I would love to run an all human campaign, so more variations in the guards, soldiers, rogues, hunters, wizards, etc would be great).

If I remember correctly, Mearls said that we would be seeing more NPC archetypes in the book. We definitely need more high-level NPC write-ups other than the archmage. High level priests, warriors (from tough warlord types to holy warriors with stats that could make them allies or foes), and rogues (both assassins and thieves' guildmaster types) would very much be appreciated. I also hope to see stats for high level humanoid threats, like an orc war chief or a drow high priestess of Lolth.

I'd like to see brief updates for any dragons that survived the Sundering.

Likewise for Beholder hives like the Xraunrarr, and for any of the Illithid cabals that have spread to the surface Realms.

I'd like to see some things like templates for skeletons/zombies rather than have them waste space with a huge number of iterations. I'm also assuming that as a FR supplement it'll be expanding into yet un-updated monsters of the realms, which will be good as well.

I'm fairly easy to please when it comes to bestiaries, so at this point it's more of what I hope doesn't make it more than what does. I hope we don't get another giant swathe of content for giants and dragons, for example, with demons/devils trailing not far behind that.

I will echo the sentiment that I'd like to see some more fey, it's always been really weird to me how often they get the short end of the stick on content.

Oddly enough, if you think about it, there are very few monsters that are really FR-specific. Kobold Avenger mentioned the three most iconic ones, and beyond those there isn't much else besides a handful of monsters like the malaugrym. I'm paging through the 3e Monsters of Faerun in comparison (it too, was the second "monster book" of its edition, but with only 96 pages!), and a substantial amount of the creatures in there are actually older edition monsters that simply didn't make the 3e MM and were updated here, even though they weren't particularly FR-specific. In actuality, a good number are even in the 5e MM!

I honestly don't think we'll get much on dragons in the book. But then again, since they are half of the name of the game, they will need to make at least a token appearance. I'm thinking we'll see one or two dragon types updated (most likely the deep dragon at least), and maybe a few examples of premier Realms dragons that can be easily adapted to other settings simply by re-naming (heck, they could re-use three very nasty spell-using evil dragons from SKT if they wanted). I'd love to see the gem dragons updated, and still hold out some hope, but it will take around 15 pages or so for the all stat blocks and quick descriptions, so I'm not sure if they will use that much of precious space in this book to do so, especially if they have a psionics book in the pipeline.

Giants, on the other hand, I think we'll see a bit more of. We already know we're getting firbolgs in the book, and one of the developers stated we would see other giant variants as well. Again, SKT could be the inspiration for such variants as cloud giant mages and frost giant jarls. One or two more powerful variants for each giant type probably wouldn't be unwelcome, but I wouldn't want to see much beyond that.

I'm kind of leaning towards the opinion that we won't be seeing too much in the way of extraplanar creatures in the book, so your fear about demons and devils will hopefully be unfounded. Anyway, when it comes to devils, there aren't too many more types to update (the abishai are the most notable of the missing, and as they were in Monsters of Faerun I wouldn't be surprised to see them in VGtM) I have a feeling we'll see a few types of the various fiends (and whether the demodands/gehreleths will be updated, who knows?), and maybe a bit more focus on the celestials (given their near-absence in the MM) when it comes to extraplanar beings.

I'd like to see:

-Gem Dragons (I love me some psionic dragons).
-More beholder-kin (which we are pretty much guaranteed to get:cool:).
-The more powerful Modrons (including Primus of course).
-More celestials like Archon the other two types of devas and maybe guardinals and classic planar eladrin (although maybe the last ones may be better represented as Fey in this edition?), at least we're getting the Ki-rin, which is a good start.
-Speaking of Fey, more of those please, specially evil ones.
-The remaining Yugoloths.
-MORE dinosaurs.
-Some of the dragons introduced as chromatic and metallic dragons in 4e.

I love monsters, I love player content and I love story and adventure seeds. I hope we get all of that.

Actually I would like the book been written as "rumors" or from an ingame perspektive like the old volo guides. That leaves a lot of room for the DM to vary a bit.

My favourite monsters would be spellcasting derro variants There was only a special npc with the spell like abilities of old... and terribly equipped standard derros.

I would like goblin and kobold variations. Some that utilize their classic weaponry more.
Cave fishers would be nice too.
Actually the monster manual is very complete and I don't really miss something substantial... and what I missed was mostly added in the first few adventures.

Yup, Mearls has said on Twitter that there will be more NPC templates, that there are zero new monsters (all updates from previous editions), and that there will be options for Rangers and Druids use.

Personally, I would like to see more templates for monsters, we got maybe two or three in the MM.
