D&D 5E What Races (classes) do you allow or disallow in your campaign?

Calm down, dude. Unless you are in his game, you still get to have all the nice things in 5e.

Oh I'm not angry, I apologize for giving that impression. I'm just pointing out the pettiness of a certain subset of grogs who constantly crap on everyone who has the audacity to enjoy something different from them.

I've been running campaigns in the same world since it was AD&D and I like to have continuity. So no dragonborn, drow, tieflings and so on. I'm thinking of banning warlocks in the future because of thematic issues and who the warlock would get their power from since I don't allow evil characters.

It's not that I think they're particularly overpowered and I had a lot of fun playing a dragonborn in 4E, but it helps me keep track of the world's fiction if new races don't suddenly pop in and out of existence.

Gnomes can be either forest gnomes or insane tinker gnomes. If you run a tinker gnome I allow reskinned sorcerers to be steam-punk-like.

But otherwise? Pretty old school. I even resisted adding half orcs into the world for quite a while. I did once allow a Deva in 4E but it turned out he was a mad god cursed with amnesia so that was one-of-a-kind.

Of course I inform potential players of both race and class restrictions, some will bulk at such restrictions. others are more than happy to abide by them. It is just a matter of taste I would say, there is stuff I do not like and stuff I do like. This in the end is a reflection of both me and my campaign.

As for the Munchkin term, sorry if I offended, I call every class or race I dislike a munchkins dream class or race lol.

On to further rock the boat, I also put restrictions on alignment IE no True copout, no Chaotic Stupid (the Alignment of choice for murder hobo PC's) nor any evil alignments. I want my campaign to be fun, memorable and avoid possible Murder Hobo activities. Believe me, when I restarted DM'ing earlier this year, I thought most players would be mature caring adults, but some are not.

Machypilot; yes my players do have fun in my campaigns, I have sustained two campaigns over the last two to three months, granted not as long as some here but I think I'm doing pretty good for restarting at the beginning of this year. Plus I love DM'ing, throwing riddles, puzzles, cool tactical situations, interaction with strange and wondrous NPC's or creatures makes playing D&D 5E such an awesome event during each session.

Once more, great stuff on how you guys run your campaigns when it comes to using races and classes.

Agreed.

Lord knows I probably wouldn't enjoy playing in the OP's game (just as I'm sure he probably wouldn't like playing in mine), but then I don't have to. And, as long as the OP informs his players of what he allows and doesn't allow beforehand (which I have no reason to assume he doesn't) then everyone can make informed decisions about playing or not playing as they please.

Oh, hey! I allowed a one-of-a-kind deva this way too, only she was a human queen whom a mad god cursed with amnesia. And owls.

I have not run 5e as of yet. However, Darksun or an Asian themed campaign aside, the following are most likely allowed

Races
All Campaigns: Human (variant)
Most Campaigns: Dwarf (Hill, Mountain (Mountains lose Heavy Armor Proficiency)), Half-Elf (non-drow), Elf (High, Wood), Gnome, Halfling, Lizardmen
Some campaigns: Goblin, Gnoll, Half-Orc, Half-Ogre, Kobold, Minotaur, Ogre, Orc,

Classes
Barbarian: Berserker (may drop for a Berserker type Fighter Archetype)
Bard: Lore, Valor
Cleric: may drop for a third party priest or divine warlock variant
Druid: Circle of Land
Fighter: Battlemaster, Commander (JesterDavid), Skald (I am not a fruit)
Fighter variant: Light Armor Fighter (Khaalis)
Paladin: Devotion, Ancients
Ranger variant: Spellless (Unearthed Arcana)
Rogue: Thief, Minstrel (I am not a fruit)
Sorcerer: Fey (JesterDavid)
Warlock: ArchFey (Great Old Ones are NPC (limited to certain campaigns), Fiend is NPC Only)

Witch (a third party),
Witch (BMcDaniel)

Munchkin's got a meaning, and unfortunately the Munchkinest of all races is the variant human :p

But eh, we all know me. I love all the races. Let them all be playable

However I also notably dislike alignment so...

I don't like point buy. I find it leads to either decision paralysis or munchkinism and often both. I do standard array +2; that is to say, everybody gets 2 points to distribute as they wish on top of any racial modifiers. That gives everybody even footing, minimizes whining, and does everything faster - especially for newer players.
Curious minds inquiring. Do you have some kind of cap or something? Because I can just imagine that people will put those extra two points into getting Str / Dex / spellcasting Attribtue 18 almost all the time, which is basically going to be munchkin-y as well.

But I must say, I do like this idea. Point buy does tend to lean towards two main stats and dumping the rest, and I find the dice rolls leads to unhappiness with a crappy roll, especially if someone gets an 18 in their starting stats. The problem I had with arrays is that it does tend to feel like forcing people into a niche if it doesn't match their racial / boons. That extra bonus +2 feels like it could encourage people to break a bit out of the same old forms that come up time and again.

Pfft, the real meaning of Munchkin is when you are duel wielding Stormbringers from the back of an Ancient Dragon, not being some piddly fire breathing Dragonman.

I call shenanigans on the OP being a real Grognard!
