D&D 5E What do you want in a Dark Sun book (sans psionics)?

Maybe have variant Preservation/Defilement spellcasting rules that apply to all forms of spellcasting, and then dedicated subclasses for a few classes that take it further than the variant rules?
That’d be cool. As long as you don’t have to be a specific class to preserve/defile, I’m cool with it.

I got that one from a thing Mearls did a while back about how 5E Dark Sun would go: might not apply anymore, but he made a strong case for Defining and Preserving as Subclasses with other Wizards put "off-limit." It'll be interesting to see how it is treated in the end.
I’ve got no problem with them being arcane traditions, I just wouldn’t want that to be the only way to defile/preserve. Sorcerers and Warlocks should have their own versions if they go that route IMO.

IIRC, his suggestion was that Wizards be limited to Preservers & Defilers, Warlocks be limited to Templars, and Sorcerers excluded from the Setting entirely (with a sidebar saying "unless you are the only Sorcerer in the world, ask your DM").

I want materials. Bone sword versus iron swords versus wood swords. Etc.

Resolve that with using normal dice for minor quality material and 1 die up for steel.

e.g. obsidian shortsword 1d6 steel shortsword 1d8.
Easy as pie, balanced and not fiddly with +x or -x to hit damage and similar c**p

Also if you got a magic weapon from minor material it is not downvalued by a -x mod versus a nonmagical weapon of steel.

For armor you can make a custom table.

Check out my attempt in this thread for more ideas

I did leave out some stuff others would integrate, because I am a purist. E.g. a bone greatsword is bs, no way you can do craft effective weapon like that. Also the settings cultures are quite antique, so I stuck to weapons you could expect to exist, plus they could be crafted effectively. Ah just check out the tables I made if you are interested.

@OP
The paragon paths resolved for 5e would be interesting (b)

Do I need a max for dark sun? 2E had ability Scores going as high as 24. And that was pretty badass in that edition that isn’t even comparable with 5E

Does not work in 5e. Do not run into that trap. You have to be within 8-20, no matter what because of BA. Resolve things like extra STR another way, e.g. give +1d4 damage to halfgiants (No matter what their actual STR score is) when they use a weapon and let them do 2d4 if they are unarmed. This is like a human on whom an enlarge spell has been cast, so totally in balance.

Dark Sun needs a lot of rule variations.
I think, going as bigh as 24 with ability scored might work. Higher would be problematic. This boosts characters which don't wear armor (which in Dark Sun is questionable).
Speaking of this, I remember armor in Dark Sun coming in pieces.
A simole rule like: You can get AC from Armor pieces you wear for every point of strength you have. Each piece reduces max dex bonus by 1. Or something like that.

For a wizard and a sorcerer defiling can easily be built into arcane recovery and sorcery points

Ahh, that makes sense. Not sure I like the idea of no sorcerers, even with the sidebar. I mean, if you are the only sorcerer, shouldn’t your magic still defile unless you preserve? I’m fine with templar being the only warlock patron (or... Sorcerer King patron, I suppose) and preservation/defiling being the only arcane traditions, but I’d prefer sorcerers to get a similar setting-appropriate treatment rather than be written out.

The return of the gladiator as base class with its own subclasses (the kits from the handbook in the 2nd Ed).

I wish to know how the metaplot continue, and the possible links with the dark domain Kalidnay in Ravenloft. And I want to know what there are in the regions beyond Tyr, and not only the death lands with their undeads.

The giths as playable race, and with opposible dumbs, but when there are amputed as punishment.

An open space to allow the new PC races from the Expanded Psionic Handbook. Also the option to allow the classes warden (primal defender from 4th Ed) and the totemist shaman (magic of incarnum).

Rules for "biohackers" and the lifeshaping "biotechnology".

Open door for possible "spin-off". How is the "crystal sphere" of Athas?
