WotC WotC'S May Community Update Talks School Support, Accessibilty, & Creator Marketplaces

Also convention attendance and pre-alpha tests of the Virtual Tabletop

The Community Update page on D&D Beyond has a new entry which briefly covers topics such as ongoing support for schools and clubs, accessibilty of D&D Beyond for players with disabilities, early plans for the third-party creator marketplace, plans for convention attendance, and the upcoming Virtual Tabletop.

It's mainly a (very brief) recap of things which came out of the recent D&D Creator Summit (see D&D Creator Summit--VTT & One D&D, D&D Creator Summit--'D&D Beyond And Beyond', D&D Creator Summit -- Morning Sessions) but the key points include:
  • One D&D reiterated again as being 5th edition, not a new edition. This is something WotC is repeating frequently, and is a message they are clearly very keen to get across.
  • School and club support includes teaching kits, afterschool club kits, and free access to D&D Beyond resources for educators.
  • Plans to connect with accessibility experts to ensure D&D Beyond is a tool that everybody can use.
  • Migration to D&D Beyond as the 'front door' of D&D.
  • Intention to eventually create a third party marketplace, but this is a long way in the future.
  • A new creator summit at Gen Con in August.
  • Pre-alpha tests of the VTT with small groups.

Tbh I really think they have a new underlying system in dev, and that’s why they haven’t fixed anything since buying DDB.

Maybe it’s the “general features” system the DDB folks talked about before the purchase, maybe something else, but IMO it’s gotta be something like that.
Yeah, it would make sense that, with the purchase and the 2024 changes, they're taking the time to upgrade the underlying engine, which is why development, from the outside, has stopped. They're about to create new versions (to at least some degree) of all the classes and do a lot more, something that's apparently been difficult to do in the past, but which they can't put off being able to handle for much longer.

The one change I want to see in D&D beyond is that content from books I haven't bought should be filtered out by default. Browsing the spell or monster lists can be tedious these days, when 1/3 of the entries are from books I have no interest in.

I know this is unlikely to change, as customer satisfaction will always be a lesser priority than promoting their products. 😣

I wish there was also the option to filter out pieces of books (like, say, only allow the races but not the spells or whatever) or to only enable your own homebrew rather than everyone’s.

It’s a bit of a pain having to vet everyone’s character sheets to make sure they didn’t unknowingly choose something they weren’t supposed to.

I love the idea of 3PP market within D&D Beyond.

I hope to see licenced titles, something like Minecraft, for example the husks and mist monsters from "Fortnite: Save the World" in a pack, but some husks could wear optional different clothing as "miniatures" in a medieval dungeon. Or a pack of "Legend of Zelda" or "Final Fantasy".

You can filter your searches be source in DnD Beyond. Not it is not default, but you can filter it if you want.
