Isn't it from the ancient Greek word phylakterion, which is a kind of protective amulet or well defended box?
Yes, but in English usage has historically referred primarily, if not exclusively, to Jewish tefillin, which has all sorts of baggage. Game designers don't want that sort of baggage, nor should they.

Also, I should note that if people ask a question and then find the answer themselves, post the answer after the question, you could be helping someone else with the same problem. Deleting the question is almost as bad as editing the post with the follow up "it's okay everyone, I found the answer". This means that everyone else that has the same issue comes across the question, checks for the answer and finds nothing!

@Coredump

So I’m pretty sure under the GDPR laws released a few years ago you do have the right to be erased. However it’s pretty much the nuclear option. A bit like obliviate spell Hermione uses on her parents. Total erasure, with no going back. I understand it’s a total pain in the fundament to do so it’s one way.

Be careful what you wish for. If someone was holding a monkey paw now you’d be gone!

I'm fine with "phylactery" as it sounds sophisticated, which a lich probably would like. But "soul cage" has a certain badass appeal I feel sunglass-wearing liches would approve of.

I hate to break anyone's hearts... but I do not believe even the last thread here is truly the last thread. Because if I'm not mistaken and remembering correctly (and @Morrus would be able to confirm)... I want to say there was one (if not a couple) massive message board losses back in the early 3E era. Where the entire system had to get wiped and started anew. And I don't believe Morrus was able to save old threads when the new boards got up and running (or at least not all of them), so I think the true starting point of the EN World universe is truly lost to time.

Which is odd because I've never heard another Jew refer to it as a phylactery unless they were talking about DnD and pointing out the... connection? Honestly connection feels like a strong word.

Anywho I'm cool with horcrux. Everyone knows what a horcrux is these days.
