Wheel of Time Discussion - Spoilers(with book spoilers)

TheSword

Legend
I really enjoyed the scene where Matt blew the Tide Bottle of Valere to summon the heroes. All in all I liked this season better than the last, even though they changed a huge number of events.

I think the only major disappointment from me was that Rand and Ishamael didn't fight in the sky over Falme. I was really looking forward to seeing that. Oh, and when Perrin killed Bornhald's father, rather than being mistaken for causing his death. I didn't like that part at all.
I agree on both points.

I’m ok with Egwene freeing herself from the Adam, rather than Nyneave always coming to the rescue. Though her standing up to Ishamael was a bit… off. I think it diminished him - like he’s just another channellers rather than one of the most power male channellers of all time.

I’m also ok with Matt’s dagger dealing the wound to Rand. It’s condensing some storylines into one and makes sense. I’ve tried to think it through to the end and I don’t think it conflicts anywhere. I also liked the way he made his own Ashanderai.

I got the impression they might drop the snakes and foxes which would be a shame. It seems like the Tea brought back memories and he was shouting he remembered when the heroes of the horn arrived. Maybe he will still have holes, but I hope they don’t miss that bit out. It was cool.

I can't remember the books thst well.

When did Rand proclaim himself in them?
“Above the Watchers Over the Waves shall he proclaim himself,
bannered 'cross the sky in fire.”

He was proclaimed in Falme at the end of book 2. The Watchers over the Waves were based in Falme. In the book Perrin hoists the Banner of the Dragon in the air and obviously there is the fight in the clouds where everyone can see what looks like Rand defeating the Dark

Book 3, the Dragon Reborn, near the end. It’s connected to another major event like the battle at Falme, so I don’t want to spoil it in case the show decides to use that event.
I think this is the first time Rand is definitely confirmed as the Dragon reborn by one of the key prophecies that can’t be denied.

It’s also probably the point he properly comes to terms with himself rather than other people telling him he is, and so is willing to take on the mantle of the role.

Don't remember any of that derp.

Think it was 2000.

Pretty sure he was referencing the archers on the clifftops... they kept firing arrows at Moiraine and he'd catch them.
He was looking out to sea, not at the cliffs. And he had already dealt with all the attackers on the beach, it had been a couple of minutes since any arrows where shot from the dunes.

What I think happened was the final VFX didn't quite match the script. Any surviving ships should have been franticly trying to put distance between them and those that were burning. That's assuming the ships were crewed.

Frankly, that fleet, wooden ships, anchored in close proximity, was ridiculously vulnerable to fire, even without magic. Not implausibly though. There is an arrogance which comes with "I have a huge fleet" which can cause leaders to make silly decisions. Where the ships even crewed? If you leave the ships crewed, then you need to keep them supplied with food and water. If you disembark most of the crew, then the ships aren't going to be able to manoeuvre if they come under attack. Give me six small fireships and I could have sunk that fleet myself! Even better if I could have borrowed the Whitecloaks' fog machine.
Malkier wasn't known for its navy lol...
Sounds about right.

I read 1 - 4 in one go then I was wierd enough read the rest of the series again each time a new book came out. With the exception of book 9.

That said, there is an awful lot of detail to forget. The ‘derp’ is one of the reasons I love the book series. It’s a world builder’s paradise. The details can’t be explained in a TV show and it’s probably the reason it will never be a great adaption for me. I’ve made peace with that though and am enjoying it for what it is.

Yeah. I thought the same thing. It just wasn't as big as the other points for me.

Speaking of minor issues with the show. Adding Uno to the heroes of the Tide bottle was premature. In the books he did a whole lot of things that caused Birgitte to tell him that it was a possibility. In the show not so much. All he really did to distinguish himself was die in a different way than most.

Seems better than just having a whole bunch of people we have never heard of. He may well have done a whole bunch of heroic things earlier/off screen.

That even stood out to me, as someone who hasn't read the books. They have tried to play her as some sort of prodigy, but not the most powerful of the Two Rivers group. I don't mind that they had her stand up to Ishamael, to buy some time, but perhaps the visible cost should have been greater?

I think that the emotional payoff was worth it, whether or not it was completely earned in the story.

Yeah. They could have a small scene next season where Matt is like, "Did you see me!? I fought with Birgitte Silverbow(flash to Birgitte) and Artur Hawkwing(flash to Artur) and Famous Amos(flash to Amos) and Mrs. Fields!(flash to Mrs. Fields), etc.

Or if they really wanted it to be Uno he should have not been murdered in an irrelevant way, but instead stayed alive to heroically sacrifice himself to save a bunch of women, children and goats during the battle, before the Tide bottle was sounded.

I think the decision to pretty much strip the hunt for the horn out of it by having Perrin separated first episode almost, ingtar etc captured and Rand off doing their own thing. It kind of lost all meaning. I thought the horn itself was a bit of an afterthought.
