I said no. I require players to put at least a little effort into role playing or just play the dull robotic way. As soon as a player starts to role play, I hold them to the high standard.
Yeah that doesn't make any sense to me. Why even have character stats if success is determined by the player's ability to roleplay and not by the actual mechanics of the game? I could see that being fun for professional voice actors and whatnot, but that sounds awful to me

1: Genuine ignorance on my part, why does spring mean games breaking up? Is DMs killing the whole party so they can walk away from the game more common in springtime?

2: I don't require players to speak in character, but I do ask them what their character is trying to do. In order for a roll to be called, there is something done to call for said roll... But yes, some people are more shy than others, and sometimes they do want to play the "face" character for that exact reason.

All I ask from these players is "what are you trying to do/get across/persuade/deceive." They can even repeat exactly what the rest of the party comes up with! But I do ask them to repeat whatever it is themselves, since it's their character making the roll.

The player doesn't need to come up with a rousing speech or an exact deception or veiled threat- just tell me what you're trying to do. And then based on the roll I might say: "you give a rousing speech, maybe about the importance of community and relying on one-another" because that gives an example to the player to think on for future situations.

Not the OP, but in my experience in a place where spring means 'the sun begins to show itself, take advantage while you can' yeah various fall/winter activities fall away a bit.
Thanks for the explanation!
I often find it's end of the year holidays that'll kill or put games on hold, but summer coming around and family trips etc. can also do that. Makes sense!

Was always the bane of my WoW Raids, suns out gotta get to the gym, get to the lake, all that kind of stuff.

Im guessing they are asking you let Doug be the face because the devil is in the details.
Like, for example, this sound suspicious AF.
If I was to stat up @bloodtide as an NPC in my RPG, charisma would definitely be low. I don’t mean any offense by that, it just is my perception.
And it begs the question - how can someone really low in charisma really judge how high charisma functions in game?
Anyone else wonder why OP doesn’t ever provide actual examples of what is happening in game and what the player did? Instead it’s always broad and exaggerated generalizations.
I don't think Charisma is the real concern. OP has never been convincing in all these improbable tales where their players are being so unreasonable and/or incompetent or the like.

In the OP, the original group was abruptly killed off by another DM wanting to stop and leave the game. The OP stepped up to continue the game and formed a new group at the wishes of the other players. I think it now becomes his game and he has a style of DMing that seems to include a certain amount of roleplaying in order to make CHA checks. He does have the power/right to run the game he likes, we seem to have had several threads about this.

Of course, I agree that he is doing a disservice to the players by going above their ability. Several other posters seem to have stated other reasons and I mostly agree

This is a problem you are creating and imposing on Doug. Stop it. Encourage him. Help him make the right mechanical choices and teach him how to role play. Otherwise you are doing a disservice to Doug, your group and the hobby community.
Don't even need to and anything. Just this.
