D&D 5E two things about D&D that could be more interesting

But that system rewards even more good rolls and punishes bad ones. It remains binary

D&D 5E two things about D&D that could be more interesting

Well, it depends on what you're aiming for. If you want to have generally binary outcomes with sometimes an additional effect this is an easy implementation. The fighter in full plate with Dex 10 still won't make his Acrobatics check, but at least he gets *something* when he rolls well...

D&D 5E two things about D&D that could be more interesting

Simple and fast anti-binary hack: If you fail the check, but roll more than 10 on the d20, you fail with a boon or opportunity If you succeed, but roll less than 10, you succeed with a threat or complication Many variants possible

D&DN and Epic Fantasy ((Apologies, Long))

I don't quite follow the logic of the argument. If anything, the comparison between Conan and LotR points to two different ways of storytelling, S&S vs. Epic Fantasy, and does not in any way relate to the perceived level of the protagonists. Remember the whole point of E6 began with the premise...

How should rules modules be organized?

I'd like a combination of both, actually. Quick, easy and simple additional rules and options should be tied in directly with their relevant section, while rules which add a whole new dimension to the game (e.g. tactical combat with miniatures) should deserve their own chapter (or perhaps even...

The danger of the Three Pillars of D&D

I think this post really gets to the essence of the necessity for both "balance" and "variety" between characters: Mechanical "balance" then does not mean that all characters contribute equally to a (combat, skill, social) encounter. It means that characters have an equal opportunity* to shine...

Monsters are more than their stats

I don't agree at all with this statement. 1) Using dispel magic to dispel the charm effect requires you to cast a spell on the king. Now why would he (and his guards) allow that? Before you can earn the trust of the court, you will have to use a lot of other skills. So it's not all magic that...

Well, at WotC they are at least conscious of the problem.

Rate Of Advancement Question, Or "Is the XP chart changing?"

As a DM, you have perfect control of the rate by which your players' characters gain new levels. Currently my group and I are playing a fast levelling campaign (since we never get to lvl +10 for some reason and would like to play our characters at high levels for a change) where my players gain...

D&D changes every 5 levels by design...

Another thing which influences gameplay is the ability of the players to travel through the game world. From level 1-9/10 the players are completely dependent on the DM for the possibilities of large scale travelling, while from level 9/10-13/14 they can fast travel anywhere in the world, and...

    Best race with Cha bonus

Take the Lesser Aasimar variant from Player's Guide to Faerun. They are just the same as Aasimar, but don't have the outsider type and don't suffer any LA. Well, if your DM allows it...

Is There A Spell That Makes You Colossal Size?

Spellguard of Silverymoon (player's guide to Faerun) lvl 4 ability: Spellguard: "(...) At 4th level the spellguard of Silverymoon may cast any personal range defensive aracen spell on another character with a touch. For this purpose a defensive spell is one that improves AC, increase a saving...

    Some thoughts on D&D warfare

I wonder how effectively an undead army would be. Skeletons or zombies 'cost' 25gp per HD to raise. They don't need food nor water nor proper housing. For 50 gp per HD you can create mummies etc. The price of black onyx gems would rise tremendously, however...

    Some thoughts on D&D warfare

How many critical hits would 10 000 1st level warriors make? If you treat sections of your army as a mob, even 1st level warriors could be devastating.

    Some thoughts on D&D warfare

If you have a feudal society, wartime mobilization / defence could be part of the peasants' obligations.
