D&D 4E Forked Thread: Some Thoughts on 4e

err.... no. PHB295 "Knocking Creatures Unconscious When you reduce a creature to 0 hit points or fewer, you can choose to knock it unconscious rather than kill it."

Determining line of sight vs cover

I think the difference here is that Cover is determined from EVERY corner (1 or 2 blocked = cover, 3 or 4 blocked = superior cover) whereas LoS is determined from only the Best corner (even just 1 unblocked = have LoS). So, in your example, you could have LoS determined along corners not...

    Spell Questions...

It's an Immediate Interrupt, so it goes into effect BEFORE its trigger is concluded and can impact or negate its trigger. Thus, the +4 AC/Ref does apply to the attack that triggers it. See PHB268 for the difference between Interrupts and Reactions. I have to think "every" means "every". But...

    Lifting an enemy?

No roll at all. The kobold was already immobilized and is subject to be intimidated by its low hp level, so the whole "lift him off the ground one handed" bit is just adding color to the scene with no mechanical impact at all. Things with no mechanical impact just "make the scene look cooler"...

    Warlord and Tactical Shift

Sorry, I must've made a mistake in reading your post, which was a reply to mine, seemingly objecting to it, which you now say (and I can now see) was essentially agreeing with it, just quibbling about my using the words "attack is announced". By those words, I meant phases 1 and 2 of the list...

    Warlord and Tactical Shift

Several people have stated this, but that doesn't make it true. The rules are not silent on this matter, nor is this a case of a bullet list that may or may not have been intended to indicate order. Here, there is a numbered, ordered list of steps that must be ignored for the question to...

    Warlord and Tactical Shift

You are entirely correct... I withdraw the amplified objection; this ruling would only rarely amplify this power to multi-target protection. However, this changing (via purposeful ignoring) of the triggering rules for OAs and OA-like Interrupts such as Combat Challenge (which is really what is...

    Warlord and Tactical Shift

Let me try to make it a little more obvious why this is a major power-up for this power. Let's make the attack a Ranged Burst. It goes off in the middle of the party, everyone is hit for damage. The Warlord moves the Great Weapon Fighter out of the burst (he is no longer damaged) and adjacent...

    Warlord and Tactical Shift

We're talking about CC because we're talking about the timing rules for triggering Interrupts. There's only one rule. I have no problem with negating the attack by any means (moving out of range, out of line of effect, whatever); that's what Interrupts do. I have a problem with ignoring the...

    Warlord and Tactical Shift

But you're actually turning off the requirement for clever tactical thinking this way in far more cases than you're adding to it. Certainly this power can negate the hit. I don't deny that. In fact, it is specifically designed to do that, since it is an interrrupt that triggers on the hit...

    Warlord and Tactical Shift

IMO, no. The trigger is being hit not being attacked, so the attack has already been made and resolved. Any OA would need to come BEFORE you resolve the attack. Or, in a more orderly fashion... 1) Announce attack (determines type of attack and target) 1i) Check for and resolve OAs, Trigger...

    Collected Core Handbook Errata

The difference, I think, is between seeing at all (Line of Sight) and seeing clearly and completely (cover or the lack thereof).

    Corners and Cover

You are quoting a rule on Blast in a discussion about Burst. They are two very different things, with the subject of this discussion (how they respond to cover) being one of the most important differences.

Why saving throw for non-duration stuff?

Not true if those amazing abilities include feats and powers that enhance saves. As they can if you want them to (esp. if you're Human), and will for Elite and Solo monsters inherently. Escaping from a Grapple is an action. Actions can (and frequently do) have base mechanic rolls involved...
