    Necromancer...

I think your best bet would be recommending that the player become either a Wizard or Druid. And then just reflavor the powers appropiately. Just change the powers from doing elemental damage into necrotic damage.

Raven Queen Cleric - Roleplay Problem

I think the best idea is to talk to your DM. I don't think us folks here on ENWorld don't know enough about your characters and players to really make a good call. That being said, if I were in your shoes I would approach the DM and suggest that, at his discretion, that your cleric's...

All Fours: the Rule of Fours? the Game of Fours?

I wrote something similiar awhile ago, but in 3s instead of 4s: Abilities Strength Endurance Dexterity Intelligence Wisdom Charisma Traits: Fortitude: Higher of Strength or Endurance Reflex: Higher of Dexterity or Intelligence Will: Higher of Wisdom or Charisma Each archaetype makes attacks...

    co-DMing 4th edition

It sounds to me that he like basically wants to play D&D minis. As long as he's cool with the possibility he might not get to do much on heavy-RP nights it sounds good to me. I don't think you'll lack for things to do. Even when the PCs are in combat you can still do narrative stuff while your...

    Is D&D "about" combat?

I dunno, I would argue that D&D is all about combat. Its just that theres many different forms of combat. Sure there's the traditional martial-and-magic type of combat, where you roll dice, add modifiers, and move around a map grid. But then there's also social/political combat between NPCs...

My DM'ing has gotten worse over the years, not better

I don't think there's anything wrong with the idea of "peaking" as a DM. It happens to athletes, writers, performers, and artists, so why not DMs as well? Personally the peak of my DMing "career" was 7 years ago when I ran an epic 9 player game over the course of a year. I haven't been able to...

    Economic game changers: Replicators

I think the biggest game changer would be the discovery of an infinite power source. Of course it would also need to be 100% clean and easily extractable. With that, discovery of technologies such as replication and teleportation should be child's play. Another huge game changer would be a...

    Hide Expertise & Sentinel AC

Yeah the wording of those two features are confusing, although logically they exclude each other. I think a better way to phrase it is like this: Sentinel: IF you are applying your Dex/Int Modifier to AC, THEN you can choose add your Con modifier to AC, INSTEAD of using your Dex/Int Modifier...

    Which Gadget?

I don't think you can get a decent projector under $400 so I'm going to recommend the iPad1 (the only difference between iPad1 and iPad2 is that the iPad2 has better cameras for video recording). Laptops can be nice. It's nice to have an actual keyboard, and the monitor makes a mini-DM screen...

[Game Theory] Viability of the "Hostage Defender"

I think its really tough to imagine a marking mechanism that would fit what you're suggesting. Lets say the Zerker marks a goblin, and he gets to charge when his mark is violated. Why would he be unable to hit the violating goblin with the charge? Why would he not charge if the goblin attacked...

D&D 4E Is Paragon Tier the "sweet spot" of 4E? And other ruminations on the tiers

I've tried running 2 epic campaigns, and the thing I struggled with the most is making them *FEEL* like D&D. When PCs have access to outlandish powers, rituals, and self-resurrection abilities the campaign "feels" more like a Superhero RPG than a Fantasy RPG. I think part of the problem is...

D&D 4E Is it me or are 4E modules just not...exciting?

I agree with the OP's sentiment, and here's 2 reasons why: ----- 1. Writing adventures and writing supplements requires two completely different skillsets. Its the dichotomy between fluff and crunch. I would argue that because 4E is more "crunchy" than previous editions of D&D, it also means...

    So, What's the Controller's 'Thing'?

Well the nice thing about 4E is that every class fills multiple roles. Like a Monk is a striker first, controller second, defender third, and leader fourth. And then there's extra stuff that can change your character's role such as race or build. For example, every Dragonborn is kinda...

Weapon training provides power instead of access

I think one thing you need to consider is that the features "Brutal" and "Cutting" vary dramatically depending upon the die value. Like your Quarterstaff is 2d4 Duelist Brutal 1. The "Brutal" tag on this weapon is powerful because it means a 25% chance for a reroll. (in reality closer to 30%...
