Sarah Silverman leads class-action lawsuit against ChatGPT creator

Yes, it is here to stay, though these are the "wild west" days, its parameters are being hammered out now, that is what the current lawsuits are about. Quote John Adams: "The US will be a country of laws, not men."
I get the feeling that if some had their way, we would bury the technology and never speak of it again.

You are 100% correct, many do. Though for me, as an engineer, as well as others, we saw it coming from a long way off, though right now, say for doing actual work, I saw an article in an engineering magazine that it shows about a 10-15% failure rate, so there is realistically about 90% more work to go, as that last 10% takes ten times what the initial work took. So in truth the timeline is still intact.

I’m sorry you didn’t understand my post but it’s obvious you are saying the same thing I did.
My point is that a mathematically transformed copy is still a copy. And while the software itself isn't outputting a copy, it still contains some sort of register.

Some kind of register is being kept inside these models.

1. There’s some resentment that those who previously kept their jobs through the last slate of automation or regulation were callous and insensitive.
It was a bunch of out-of-touch "journalists", only a fraction of white collar workers, not a majority or even a plurality, just a very vocal private club with connections.

2. Technological innovation has typically benefited far more than its displaced.
Until we are out of jobs to be actually done? The first advancements freed labor that allowed people to work on other things other than mere survival and the freed time allowed people to create new jobs to be done. Now, we are at a point were many jobs provide little to no value and even these are going away.

It's almost as if Kurt Vonnegut never wrote Player Piano.

It contains a probability distribution.

A jpeg is a lossy image format that takes away minor details in order to store the image at a smaller size.

I can see some comparisons to that probability distribution and a lossy format like a jpeg. I can also see alot of differences - because while you are able to recreate lossy copies of certain works, I think that’s less and less true of other works especially if many different images in the training data share similar key word tags while being radically different.

There are example of both things happening, in different countries as I'm sure you are aware. Is it cynicism when it happens?
There are examples of the entire govt of a nation basically being a crime ring, or of a leader literally eating cake on live tv while his people go hungry, or military being deployed against thier own civilian neighbors for questioning the govt, of all sort of evils.

If you talk about the future like very govt will do all those things, it’s still cynical.
The irony for myself is that I've voted left (Canadian left mind you!) for the last 20 years, until this year and as recently as 2 years ago thought UBI was a great idea.
Okay? You might want to examine the possibility that that’s a you thing, not a “the world is declining” thing.

Probably too late for that even if we wanted to.

Some days, it feels like the singularity arrived already and nobody noticed.
The singularity kicked off in the nineties. At least with the arrival of the cell phone. Try to explain what we are at to a Victorian. "Well it is like the letters page in the Times but in real time"
