I suppose you could scan in your original map one section at a time if you didn't want to also purchase the PDF. Technically they are two separate products, owning the box doesn't automatically give you the right to a free copy of the PDF.

Well, it seems like everyone seems to love Identify and Detect Magic! On a more serious note, my favorite is Legend Lore when you have a creative DM. Using that spell gives the DM an easy way to give you all kinds of very useful information.

Ohh, another thought, you could make some items be worn items. For instance, you could make Sol Ring be literally a ring that could be worn. Pick a certain amount of "slots" that can be filled with "items". Like only allow two ring slots, one slot for gauntlets, another for helms, etc...
