D&D General World building and session prep ideas

I love the idea of the temple site of the original ritual gate existing in both places, and a source of information. The temple exists underground, among the roots of a tree that no longer exists on this plane. The magic is fading, and parcels of the forest are traveling through an elemental...

3 Most Underrated Traits for Gamesmasters

    1) Empathy; thinking from the perspective of players, PC's, and NPC's. 2) Flexibility and adaptability; the absence of fixity. Your first or favorite idea adopted in isolation is never as fun as the spontaneous and collaborative ideas of your group. 3) Priorities; for me, the objective of TTRPG...

D&D General World building and session prep ideas

The party consists of a forest gnome Knowledge Cleric and human Land Druid who are both local to the city; and a half-elf Rogue, human Barbarian, and dragonborn Barbarian who arrived recently trying to escape their past. The Druid and Cleric PC's are probably nostalgic for ancient times, and...

D&D General How much time exploring a 6 mile hex?

It could be as simple as climbing a butte and making observations which might take 2 hours. It could be as difficult and time consuming as ravines and difficult terrain with plant and animal identification, which could take weeks. Decide what the cartographer expects the surveying to include...

D&D General World building and session prep ideas

Hey all, New DM here. Like many DM's, I enjoy creating large world changing events and thrusting my players into the thick of things. I'm finding it difficult to slow play the plot and allow the campaign to spiral out from the players naturally. I am currently running a game in which the players...

D&D 5E Playing an unintelligible PC

Sorry JonnyP, I made you say it.

D&D 5E Playing an unintelligible PC

He will start the adventure with his full caravan in tow. I'm sure the DM and I will come up with a reason for him to go on an adventure and leave the caravan behind. The grapple mechanics are a trade off, control vs Dmg. I have played a grappler before and had a lot of fun. Having a grappler...

D&D 5E Playing an unintelligible PC

That's a great idea as well. Especially after the initial introduction period, and the novelty dissipates. SMRT!

D&D 5E Playing an unintelligible PC

That is a great resource, that I never considered. I will certainly be peppering Mickey's speech with this slang. I've never read Clockwork Orange. Maybe I'll have to put it at the top of the list. Thanks!

D&D 5E Playing an unintelligible PC

I am preparing to play a character that is inspired by Brad Pitt's character from Snatch, "One Punch" Mickey O'Neil. How would you play a character whose speech was mostly unintelligible? It sounds fun, but I could imagine it getting obnoxious, both to play and to play with. The idea is that...

    D&D 5E Would a Goodberry satisfy a Giant?

Update: We played this scenario the other day, and I wanted to let you know how it was handled. The Monk/ Druid came out from a bank of fog and addressed the Giants. They were skeptical at first, but very hungry and very discouraged by having nothing to bring back to their leader. They each...

    D&D 5E Shadow Monk: Straight, or Monk/Rogue

Control flames extinguishes flames also. • You instantaneously extinguish the flames within the cube.

    D&D 5E Shadow Monk: Straight, or Monk/Rogue

Have you concidered Arcane Trickster? Control flame alone is really useful in making shadows out to 60 feet and will save you ki points to make darkness. There are lots of really useful spells on the wizard list that won't require a high Int.

    D&D 5E Would a Goodberry satisfy a Giant?

I love the tangents on this forum. Goodberry OP or Not? The background is that the party has just mopped the floor with a couple giants, bugbears, and a horde of goblins. The druid/ monk tracked them into the woods by himself. Rather than send them back to the boss empty handed, the character...

    D&D 5E Would a Goodberry satisfy a Giant?

As the title implies, I'd like to know how you think a Hill Giant would react to being offered a Goodberry by a Halfling Tranquility Monk/ Moon Druid?

D&D 5E Hiding in dim light / darkness

Dim light creates a lightly obscured affect, which creates disadvantage on perception checks. I would rule that advantage from keen hearing and/or smell would negate disadvantage from dim light. Darkness creates a heavily obscured area which imposes the Blinded condition. Automatic failure of...

    D&D 5E Building a better Warlock

I really enjoy creating niches for my characters. Feats are awesome for this. Invocations serve this function also. Having access to Eldritch Blast makes any non-combat specialized warlock instantly viable. Casting great damage from the safety of 120'. That is a huge boon. If you haven't played...

    D&D 5E Building a better Warlock

I agree with this completely. Almost by default, all of those options are off the table for me. YMMV. The class is really fun thematically. I am really looking forward to taking my Warlock into deeper levels and exploring the class beyond 2-3 level dips.

D&D 5E Help with Monk/ Druid for Storm King's Thunder

Honest question. Wouldn't the Attack bonus in direwolf wild shape at level 7 be (+3 STR +3 Proficiency bonus = +6)?

D&D 5E Help with Monk/ Druid for Storm King's Thunder

Dire wolf monk is pretty combat optimized IMO. Pack tactics with 2d6 + dmg and a knockdown effect. Twice with extra attack, a bonus unarmed attack or two with flurry of blows... and stunning strikes on top of that. That's potentially 2 proned enemies and 2 more who are stunned. With 70-80 feet...
