Might not hurt to have an NPC "friend" who uses the henchmen rules (sans the need for the leadership feat) who can be an aid for the game. A bard, healer, or something not-so-show stealing but who can aid with support magic or healing wouldn't hurt.

Have them take the leadership feat. This gives them a cohort, which will help in the high end combats. You will also be able to use low level NPCs to take strategic points, while at the same time forcing the PC to look after the lower end troops. Imagine keep on the borderlands if one PC led a small army against it. He could cakewalk through, but his 1st level warriors will die without his leadership.
