[sblock=Victory is Yours!]Good job everyone!

I think that was a fun fight. Wish the ankheg got another chance to grab someone and drag them underground again, that was cool. ;)

My posting will resume on Monday. Have a good weekend all![/sblock]

All the creatures have been defeated, and the field falls momentarily still, broken only by the corpse of the big creature twitching slightly, sending tiny ripples through the mud patch. All of the group has been splattered with mud and, in many cases, blood. Papolstaanas in particular resembles a clay statue of a kobold more than the real thing.

After the brief quiet, Castofle begins to cheer from just outside the pasture. "Yeah! Wow! You all..." Words seem to fail him. He looks back up the hill and calls to Hyza and Jaronel. "They did it! They beat those things and none of them even got killed!"

The two of them walk cautiously down the hill. The children start to follow, but Cillani freezes them in their tracks with a sinister giggle.

Jaronel surveys the scene with a huge grin on his face. "Allll right!" he shouts.

The teacher seems more grim, still shaken by the events and the threat to her students. But as she reaches the pasture's edge, she offers a smile. "Thank you all," she says. "May Mireva bless you. I shudder to think what could have happened if you hadn't been here." She turns back and looks up towards the school-tent. "I must bring the children back to Fulcrum now, but if there is anything else I can do for you, please ask."

Castofle is rummaging around in his large pack. After a moment he extracts a leather skin of some kind along with a tin funnel. He pats the cow's flank, whispering reassuringly to her. "I'll go ahead and get that milk," he says. "She just needs a minute or two to calm down." Jaronel watches his preparations and ministrations with interest.

[sblock=End of Battle Status/Short Rest]Ok, I assume you'd like to take a short rest... let me know how many surges you'd like to spend, and if you'd like to do multiple rests so Jynxx can use some extra healing.

Also I'll assume Jynxx only takes one more round of the ongoing damage - everyone could try heal checks on him next round to grant him saves, so we'll assume he makes it.

Here's what I have for your final status:

Azryah: HP 19/34 (8/9) AP 0
Chaku: HP 31/40 (8/10) AP 0
Jynxx: HP 11/29 (7/8) AP 0
Kaeysari: HP 28/39 (10/10) AP 0
Papolstaanas: HP 10/40 (11/12) AP 0[/sblock]
[sblock=Next Steps]I imagine that you wish to continue on to the KoJ colony. Let me know if you want to do anything else here, ask Hyza any more questions, etc. before we move on. Also if you have any special travel arrangements now would be a good time to mention them.[/sblock]
[sblock=Loots, XP]I owe you loot, but don't have it prepared. :( And it's kind of hard for these foes to have anything, they have no pockets. But I might retcon some in here later on. (Also XP of course, though I may wait until after the next encounter before totaling that up.) [/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]Maybe the ankheg swallowed all our loot? ... Nope, I got nothing.

Assuming Jynxx does a song of rest, Papolstaanas will spend two surges to get back up to full health.[/sblock]
Papolstaanas stares unhappily at the dead cow for a while, but when Hyza comes to thank them he attempts a gallant, flourishing bow, and not only spatters her lightly with mud but gets himself tangled up with his large hammer.

Chaku uses the small stream to remove most of the mud that covers him. He then heads up to the children being corralled by Hyza. He follows them around, answering their child like questions of Did you see that!!! and It was so cool when ... The goliath shows immeasuarable patience with them, and even offers tips on how to be as amazing as he and his companions such as Eat your vegetables. and Stay in school and study what it teaches.

His time with the children passes far too quickly for his liking, but it leaves soul rejuvenated and the massive man makes sure to say good bye to each and every child before they head out.

[sblock=ooc]Ok, no word on Jynxx as far as spending surges, but he can chime in on that later on.[/sblock]

Castofle collects a pretty generous helping of milk from the remaining cow. "This skin, I got it enchanted," he says. "It'll keep the milk fresh for a couple of days!" Jaronel seems impressed.

Hyza collects a few items from her house, then the children and prepares to leave for Fulcrum. Cillani offers to escort them back. "I'll wait for you there in Fulcrum... if I don't get too bored."

Then the group gets back on the main road, heading east.

Once more, the terrain and climate seems to change abnormally fast for the distance traveled. Fifteen minutes on, there is a distinct chill in the air. Another quarter of an hour and the deciduous temperate forest has given way to pines and ferns. It's definitely cold - not dangerously so, but Jaronel starts complaining - "It's sooo cold here, ya? T'em Jadites, t'ey crazy to live out here!" He puts on his ratty furs.

You pass a couple of groups of travelers bound for Fulcrum. One is a merchant party of tieflings accompanied by dragonborn and human guards. Their mules are mostly unladen - apparently they are buyers, not sellers. The second group's purpose is not so obvious. Older humans and a half-elf in silk robes are accompanied by a half dozen very young dragonborn, barely into their teens by the look of them. Both groups eye the party curiously though discreetly. Still mostly spattered with mud and perhaps a bit of ichor, you make an even more odd sight than usual.

ooc: Neither group seems particularly friendly or outgoing... but if you want to try to interact with them, we can "rewind" to it.

Small piles of slowly melting snow dot the road and meltwater drips from tree branches by the time you reach the outskirts of the colony, which Jaronel says is called Spirit's Edge. The air is clear here, but dark clouds loom several miles further on as the road rises up towards the other "horn" of the Isle.

Spirit's Edge seems divided into two sections. The first, closest to the road, is a fairly orderly-looking village of small wood and stone structures - houses, a few shops and inns, and a couple of large open-air marketplaces. The population looks to be around two hundred, perhaps two-hundred and fifty. There is some activity, people strolling around and doing business, but it seems a little quieter, less lively compared to Newhill.

The second section is a small square fort which sits directly on the road itself. High wooden walls prevent a clear view of what is inside, but roofs of a dozen or so buildings are visible, including three stone towers that are about fifty feet tall. The walls are plain, but large lacquered gates where the road meets them are painted with ornate patterns and a large platinum symbol. A half dozen heavily armed and armored dragonborn stand in formation by the gate, and patrols are visible up behind the walls.

[sblock=History DC 15]The symbol is the mark of the Shogun who rules the Kingdom of Jade, a reference to one of his titles: "The Platinum Shogun".[/sblock]
[sblock=Next...]I'm planning to run a sort-of skill challenge here. It will be more freeform than the typical style - I'll explain further as we get into it.

But first, I want to get an idea of what your goals are. Looking for interesting ingredients in the markets is one, but unless anyone's interested in playing it out, we can pretty much have Castofle handle that more-or-less off camera.

The other thing is that you've heard that the Imperium chef Balsamae Bellora is here, and you know that he has an interest in zocalti. Do you plan to investigate that, and if so what kind of approach will you take?

You may have other agendas too - just let me know.[/sblock]

Papolstaanas chats cheerily along the way, especially to Jaronel, but quiets and becomes furtive when the group encounters other parties. He is especially nervous around dragonborn and cringes whenever one looks at him.

[sblock=goals]I was thinking we should have some sort of big multicourse cooked meal together, which might give us zocalti ideas.

Papolstaanas isn't much interested in looking for Bellora. Because his hired Bacartian thugs tried to shake them down, Papolstaanas is convinced that the man is nothing but a crook. He'll go along if anyone else wants to find him, though.[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]The goal is to get the beans. If making the weird lich-type guy happy is the best and fastest way to do it, let's go with that. Anything else is a distraction.[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]I'm with BenBrown. I don't think Az would want to take the time to sit down to a multi-course meal. I'm also not sure how she'd feel about talking to the other chef. From her perspective, doing so may unnecessarily complicate matters.[/sblock]
