Alternatives to Dungeon Tiles

First Post
Just a quick thread to post alternatives to the WotC Dungeon Tiles, for people who are willing to print out their own tiles...

Starting with some freebies, originally designed for use with Warhammer Quest, they may need a wee bit of resizing to be a true 1" per square. (There used to be many other sites out there with Warhammer Quest boards... I may have to hit the Archive...)

*EDIT* This may take a few tries to open, it took me three, but then I am stubborn...

My suggestion is one I have been using for a couple years now. Skeleton Key Games does some fantastic tiles, and you can mix and match and combine them in all sorts of fun and interesting ways. There are indoor and outdoor tiles, and they have lots of free samples, and they all have 1 inch square format. What's not to like?

Skeletonkeygames' tiles are great. At a minimum I recommend printing the free ones. There are hundreds of free tiles on the internet, if you take the time to look.

I print them at work, with permission, so ink is not a factor for me. However, I have printed some at home, and it works great there too.

There are also free tile generators on-line, but I don't have a link right now. With this you can create your own rooms of your own size.

Fat Dragon Games has our new series E-Z TILES currently available that allow the user to customize each tile before printing, thus giving you more bang for your buck as the tiles can be used again and again without looking the same. We have a free set for people to try on our web site under the E-Z catagory, "E-Z TILES: Dungeon Hazards and Traps". Our new set comes out in two weeks covering graveyards.

World Works Games also makes an interesting 'hybrid' set - two dimensional with three dimensional elements. I have not gotten this set, since I tend to prefer building completely three dimensional terrain, though adding wals might not be a very difficult task. (I am currently building a canals set of geomorphs, with the sludgy yellow sewers from one of World Work's sets... since the canals double as the cities sewers this actually works for the things...)

DunDjinni and Campaign Cartographer 3 also allow designing and printing tiles, or full floorplans for that matter.

RPGObjects is another company that produces tile sets for purchase.

With regard to free stuff...

I did these (pdf's) a while ago:
http://www.enworld.org/CrookedStaffProductions/page15.html
Right now there is only enough for 10ft wide passages and a number of small rooms. I plan to do a whole bunch more... but right now I'm only running an online game (in OpenRPG)... so I'm busy creating smaller scale maps for that.

Before that I did a bunch with some rather basic software (in jpeg format) ...they are kinda too cartoon-looking now that I look back on them ...but I guess they are still usable:
http://www.enworld.org/CrookedStaffProductions/page8.html

I also made the rather simplistic (but perhaps ink-saving) maps on this page print out so that the usual 1"=5ft scale... so I've also used those too in the past :)

And just in case anyone's interested in the smaller scale maps I mentioned earlier here's the link (but like I said they are only really suitable for online gaming - where I've used a scale of 1 square = 35 pixels)

There is also a modular set on page 2 that I'm currently working on when time allows

Anyway... now that I've have shamelessly mentioned most of my own stuff, here's a few other online freebies...

This HeroQuest site has some cool tiles.

Also this is great little tool for generating a few custom tiles online:

(also check the links at the bottom of that page).

Another alternative to the Dungeon Tiles, and can be combined with them too, the Gaming Tiles for the Cadwallon RPG, from Rackham. Check here, the four items at the bottom of the page, for more information.
