The Epic rules originally had a sense that you had to go through a remarkable experience/ritual/etc that divided you from the rest of the mortal world. A lesser order of that would be more than enough to mark the "something special" represented by Tenebrium Seeds in AE.
The main thing is that gaining the opportunity to take evolved levels should require a bit of adventuring... and not be guaranteed.
