I and the players I've had preferred starting at level 1. Usually if they survive to mid-high levels, they are the types of characters that they will find memorable. I noticed when you get the high leveled characters to start with I find many players treat them in a more disposable fashion, than they would if they worked with them since lvl 1.
Nowadays I have noticed that if a player wants to do a multiclassed character that makes things a little more difficult and you're almost forced to start at lvl 2 in those cases. (although I like the starting at 0xp for level 2 idea someone mentioned earlier.)
