Because then a Close Blast is the same thing as a regular blast, since the regular blast has to be adjacent to the caster's square.

I'm looking at all the diagrams, and based on what you said, every time a Blast is shown, it's a Close blast.
Those are the only kind of blasts we know of yet.

What do you mean with "regular blast"? Got an example?

If all blasts are close, then all close blasts are regular, therefore all you have to do is say "Blast" to mean what you are saying.

No. "Close" is the type of attack. It signifies that it doesn't provoke an OA. "Blast" is the shape of the attack. They are descriptors for two different things.

You could, in theory, have an attack which is "Area blast 2 within 10", which would be a kind of wave originating from a square with in 10 squares of the caster.

No, this is completely wrong. That is a Close burst 2 - except that you forgot to include the corners.

That's a burst.

Oops, yes. I hate square burst. But you're right, now they include corners.

So, if I correct my 7X7 example

Yes, and no.

The way you've put it (with a target square in the middle), it's more of an Area burst 2.

However, if you made it:
