New backgrounds and feats in upcoming book!

WotC has unveiled some of the character options to be found in the upcoming Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse setting in a D&D Beyond article and a video.

The player options include two backgrounds and a handful of feats. The backgrounds are the Gate Warden and the Planer Philosopher, and the feats include Scion of the Outer planes, which gives you a damage resistance and a cantrip based on the plane you have a connect with. For example, a chaotic Outer Place give you resistance to poison and access to the minor illusion cantrip, which the Outlands give you resistance to psychic damage and the mage hand cantrip. Also included are a couple of new spells and some magic items.

In my opinion the D&D "witch" is the warlock. Some 3PPs and amateurs have created something, but a class needs a different gameplay and own identity. Maybe a spellcaster focused into nerfing enemies could be useful, but a class also needs a fun gameplay, and one of the principles of 5e is simpler and faster fights, then a class focused into bonus or penalties shouldn't be wellcome.

D&D can use ocultism and esoterism from real life as source of inspiration, but we should take care.

There is a great storytelling potential in the vestiges and pact magic.

Is it the sorcerer? It's the sorcerer, isn't it? [/me being facetious]
  • Sorcerer and wizard get merged into a single 'mage' class.
  • Still the spellbook wielding prepared spellcaster which is wizard. But gets metamagic as a class feature.
  • Less spells prepared at once. You could prepare so many that the entire feature was pointless.
  • The spell school subclasses get nuked.
  • Subclasses are types of magic. Stuff like war magic, dark magic, wild magic, blood magic.
  • Old sorcerer subclasses are merged with warlock subclasses and go to warlock. They all had identical themes anyway.

Please don't merge anything sorcerer with warlock unless you're planning to make warlock a full caster class.

Trouble is, sorcerer/warlock has all the cool monster themed subclasses, but can't lean into the 'play as a monster' niche at all because 99.9% of the power budget is in full spellcasting. So it's an entire cool theme completely wasted on the class.

And what doesn't help is half the sorcerer playerbase wanting 'wizard, but hot' as their class, and anything aberrant or monstrous or even themed in any way is rejected. I even see people saying sorcerer shouldn't have origin spells, despite the fact that its limited spell list means that playing towards a subclass theme is painfully difficult.

Which is why having a choice between "full caster, lightly themed" and "weird caster with magical abilities" is in fact a good split. I can play an aberrant sorcerer and get psionic ribbons added to my spells or go warlock and get all sorts of eldritch abilities. I guarantee that if you murdered the sorcerer, the wizard would get draconic, wild, lunar, shadow and psionic subclasses faster than you could blink.
