I mean do I have the proficiency to use it? I've never been allowed a firearm before so I wasn't sure if I needed some kind of feat or something for it.

I allow the use of the Downtime Training rules (PHB page 187) to pick up new skill and weapon proficiencies (in addition to languages and tools). Since these characters are 3rd level, they would have time to to do that at some point, so you'd just need to spend another 250 gp.
