Man, looks like the Open Letter to Mike Mearls did work in the end. Who would have thought?

It might have contributed to some extent, but it would be laughable to attribute this to one person's scribblings. There were many people who were against this feature and it's the collective weight of all of their efforts that bear final responsibility. As well as the wisdom of the designers in recognizing a sound, rational argument based on facts, when they see one.

All that matters now is that great weapon fighters can miss, but when they do HIT, they go BOOM

That's awesome sauce.

With Mike Mearls stating that the Basic D&D rules are taken directly from Player's Handbook for 5th edition, it is quite clear that damage on a miss won't be making a surprise re-appearance as a fighting style. Possibly in a feat and if so, it's not a big deal.

Feats are optional, and a standard way for DMs to exert control over their games is to allow or not allow specific ones. The tactical warrior feat is also not to my tastes, but who cares, few would take it, and over time as more feats come out, the chances of even seeing it in play diminishes over time, rather than increases.

July 3rd is a happy day!!

Rather than the replacement rule that was implemented, I would have simply said great weapon specialists get advantage on damage rolls. I'm going to try that out and see how it works.

My guess? DoaM was removed after the last playtest.

Well, WotC failed to woo me back with this edition. Maybe 6e will make DoaM core.

I'm guessing the 18th-level Champion archetype Fighter ability Survivor will be the next big topic. :] Or will the fact that it is a pretty high-level ability be enough of a mitigating factor? :hmm:

I crit!
The likely hood of ever playing 5e is extremely slim, even if DoaM is core.

I am just willing to support the product on that premise.

My comment stands as valid. Just cause you have a house rule doesn't mean you have to play it. I'm sure there are other people in a similar situation.
