OTOH, the 3.x era community on the WotC boards was positively hostile to house rules even being brought up outside of the (not particularly active) forum they were exiled to. RAW ruled.

That's interesting, didn't know. I hadn't thought of it, until this very comment, but if at I look at our own group - I seemed to house-rule a lot less in the 3.x era than with any other edition and it makes sense given 3.x's comprehensive system.
For 2e I was houseruling fun and balance. While for 4e I was houseruling to evoke a style that wasn't inherent in the system. For 3.x I just failed.
And finally for 5e - I think we are houseruling for grittiness and low magic mostly
