I think milestones typically work better for play by post. Going by straight experience points can mean a LOT of time spent on grindy combats later on. It also adds a layer of bookkeeping on the part of the players, and of calculating on the part of the GM that is probably unnecessary.

Reverse-engineered, most GMs have a sense of what level they want the party to be at given points in the adventure. Using points just means you have carefully design the encounters to provide the right number of points to meet that need.

The only benefit to experience points is that 'oh, we're almost there' element to being close to leveling...but honestly that's a small price to pay for more streamlined encounters and less GM overhead. :)
