and the only cool new things you might get were unpredictable and placed by the DM (as with old D&D)
Yeah, I played the pre-3.x versions of D&D, and I only liked them because I didn't know better.

Given the extreme lack of character building options that are in the game as it is, I like them. I agree with Tony Vargas, though, in the sense that I don't like them because they are taking the place of a more modular character building system.

OH! I thought this poll was asking about submarine-themed subclasses, you know, like the the Nautilus Cleric, the Seawolf Barbarian, the Red October Sorcerer, the Periscope Wizard, the Radar Paladin, that sort of thing.

Radar Paladin was my favorite character on M.A.S.H.

For choice, when first making a character I like:

1) Choose what you do / what your role in the party is:

a) Warrior
b) Mage
c) Gish
d) Specialist - for example: Thief

2) Chose how you do what you do:
Ex: Martial Skill, Magic, Technology etc.

3) Chose how you learned your skills:
Ex: Chosen by a god, Made a deal with a demon, studied for many years, dad was a dragon etc.

I believe with those three decision points you can build just about anything you want.
