Dragon 337: Will the real Zuggtmoy please stand up?

D&D Ad: It does seem a bit weird to me to have an ad for the Player's Handbook in Dragon, but I'm sure there's a reason for it over in the marketing department at WotC. From our viewpoint... as long as they by that inside back cover ad space, they can do whatever they want! :)

Zuggtmoy's Appearance: As statted out in this article, the woman upper torso/tentacle lower torso is her true appearance. I stand by my decision to make this her true form; it's a lot cooler and more demonic than the picture from the 1E ToEE. As for her old crone form, she can cast shapechange at will, so that explains that. I just didn't see her "old crone" form as being unique or interesting enough to warrent much mention, especially in the limited space I had to talk about everything else Zuggtmoy-related.

As for retconning to match up a computer game—I've got no problem with that whatsoever, especially when the new design is so much more distinctive and interesting. The incarnation of Demogorgon that appeared in the Baldur's Gate expansion helped inspire the cover to Dungeon #120 in the same way, although in this case the change in appearance was MUCH less dramatic (and pretty much just ended up giving him those cool holes in his biceps).

Well at some point Demogorgon went from "two heads which bear the visages of evil baboons or perhaps mandrills.." to a pair of Jackle or hyena heads as described in BoVD.
I can only assume it happened in planescape. Can anyone shead light on this?

I believe Monte Cook is on record admitting that this was just an error in his own notes to the artist, and that the intetion was that Demogorgon still has baboon heads.

i don't beleive Planescape had anything to do with that. remember, the BoVD was the same book where they decided Orcus needed to be buff and hardy-looking as opposed to fat and gross. ;)

It's a mistake. See the (unofficial) "Booklets of Triel" errata/3.5 upgrade document. Check out the BoVD thread on the WOTC message boards.

It happens :D *chuckle*

Nycaloths now have 4 arms in 3e because Wayne Reynolds, when drawing the Nycaloth picture for the Manual of the Planes, misread the description, which when it stated the fiend would swoop down and attack with claws on its hands and feet (4 limbs) and WAR assumed it implied that it had 4 arms.

Though in that case, I don't actually mind. Frankly 4 armed Nycaloths are pretty damn cool, even if it's because of artist error (which was perpetuated by the artist who drew the Nycaloth for the MM3).

Yeah, it's sometimes pretty amazing how a tiny miscommunication in an art order can have such huge ripples in D&D continuity. It's one of the main reasons it usually takes me 2-3 days to write an art order for an issue of Dungeon.

As for Demogorgon having hyena heads... those days are behind us now. He's all about the monkey mugs.

Okay, James, now you've done it. If we don't see a spell called monkey mug within the next three issues, you're going to have a lot to answer for. ;)

That would be the coolest. Spell. Evar. :D
