And John C Wright's "The Golden Age" series, which, while it has some serious flaws (creeping Ayn Rand-ism), is still a phenomenally well done effort at designing and describing a universe that isn't just post singularity, its post singularity at least eight times over, each one of which gave birth to at least one totally new form of human derived sentience.

You know, I actually found the Objectivist viewpoint refreshing. I haven't read a novel with a similar setting that made the same social assumptions before. Most of what I've read had been pre-cusp, post-cusp working socialism or post-cusp dystopia. It was different.

Its true that the singularity sci fi out there tends to match what you describe. But otherwise semi thought out libertarianism (with a heavy and totally contradictory dose of military communalism) tends to be the working religion of the science fiction community. I've read enough Heinlein, and Heinleinesque fiction, over the years to be vaguely sick of it all.

That's probably it then. I've read Have Spacesuit Will Travel and Starship Troopers and that's about it of Heinlein's work. I'm pretty sci-fi deficient actually. I only picked up A Mote in God's Eye yesterday. :)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Eclipse Phase as well.

The only thing is that their sample character sheet was a bit...daunting. On the plus side, uplifted animals!

Yeah, but that's also part of the beauty of it being CC-licensed. Part of me would like to see this remixed with Derrin Drader's T20 Space Opera RPG.

If I remember well GURPS had rules for that for a long time already... (?)

I wouldn't be surprised. "Trend" may have been the wrong word for it, but I like seeing elements like these in games, because it really shows a creative solution to a particularly persistent gameplay bugaboo that is fairly pervasive.

I like it anyway. Lots of Ghost in the Shell in it.

Save points?! Blargh! Video-gamey!!!

Anime. Video games. See two things and look for the third....where's the WoW comparison? :)

Closing thought: I CAN MAKE AN OCTOPUS CHARACTER OH MAN I HAVE TO PLAY THIS

Hehe, not since Oathbound gave me the ability to play a telekinetic jellyfish with a sense of superiority have I been so excited to play an invertebrate. :)
